Morning all.

 

Just a small update, had a load of tinting film left over from when we did a mates car so decided to quickly put some on my headlights to see how it looked

It's not the best job, but I'm pretty pleased with how it looks. I'll get them on the car when I've done the indicators.

I will do mate. It's only film so if it does affect brightness or cause any issues with MOT it can just be ripped off.

It does seem to let light through easily enough though.

A couple of nice deliveries shown up today.

 

Front Calipers.

Rear shoes, cylinders, bleed nipples and fitting kit.

Oil filter.

Oil.

Brake fluid.

Sparkplugs.

magnetic sump plug.

Powerflex bushes for rear.

And a leather gear gaitor.

 

Basically everything I need to finally get the car on the road!

Now it's just up to me to pull my finger out, brave the cold, and get the back end took apart.

Started derusting a rear stub axle to find its falling apart! Bugger

So now I'm on the hunt for a pair of good ones that don't cost the earth.

Some progress to report.

 

Got one side of the back end back together.

Not before putting it together and realising I'd left the spring bush at home! Foolish.

Also found a small hole in amongst the rust on the exhaust, so a new one will be fitted soon.

I'll get the other side's wishbone, tie bar, stub axle cleaned painted, polybushed, and fitted this week this week, brakes fitted at weekend and finally back on its wheels. Then I can turn it round, get the front brakes on, give it a full service, change the windscreen and it'll be MOT time! Boom.

Also, do any of you people have one of these going spare? It's the brake adjuster thingy that the load compensator ABS thing screws into the rear wishbone.

 

That doesn't make any sense at all.

well done chap the cabby is looking good just sat and read through from the begining i must agree radiant red is the best colour it given me a bit of a kick might go and drop fuel tank and replace my fuel pump and try and start her up i will have to wind by hand a bit first shes not run since 2007 :ohmy:

one thing i thought of the copper pipe is a good idea but if you can find a plumber with a flareing tool and stick a bulge on either end it will avoid the hoses sliding off, they probably wont but sods law an all that lol just a thought

That's a good point about the copper pipe mate, I've got a mate who's a plumber too. I believe I'll have to drop the coolant when I change the thermostat so I'll get him to do it then.

 

This thing is almost ready for its MOT now, I didn't have any mechanical knowledge at all when I started it, but refused to pay someone to do something I could learn to do myself.

the only reason i thought of the pipe is because my vito got tow balled at the supermarket and burst the power steering oil cooling pipe that sits just behind the front bumper 60 quid new merc only part so i made one up and frlaed the ends with my flaring tool and a piece of ally pipe as is the oem part job jobbed lol

at least dick turpin wore a mask .

gonna try get my out and take a few pics before and after i chuck a bucket of water se how many spiders are hidin in there , look forward to the update

Haha. There will be an update this weekend, I'm hoping to get the rear brakes and new handbrake cable fitted this weekend, so it should be back on its wheels with any luck.

 

I'm certainly no mechanic mate, I'm a builder. This is the first car I've really worked on. I've just took a lot of photo's as reference and studied the Haynes manual.

 

Opinions. They're obviously not done properly yet, and just resting in place. But what do you reckon?

The Mrs is mate, I'm not personally. She originally bought the cabby years ago, we sold it to the Brother in Law, and after a few years I bought it back from him to stop it rotting away in his ivy infested garage. That's how I ended up with a red car. Plus, I do like red Escorts.

 

And the Juke is a lease car, so it was what they had available at the time. If we were to spend 16 grand on a car, it certainly wouldn't be a Nissan Juke haha!

 

Well, about to have a pint of tea and a bacon butty and I'll be off to spend the day at the garage.

You have done amazeing job with the work done and the pictures taken I was under the impression you was a mechanic by trade makes this one extra special since you learnt all that along the way

i agree good work your doing and im the same even though i have mechanical knoweledge even if i have never done something id rather do it myself rather than get ripped off by a garage etc

I need one of those you try an get a proper mug for tea over here its like plattin fog have to make do with farty little coffe cups

when i join the club or come over to uk next time i am gonna buy loadss i keep breakin the china mugs my mum sent me but she died last year the inconsiderate sod and now ive no cups left lol bless you mum only kiddin just in case lol so xroc unless you seel pint tea mugs i aint joinin lol

Time for an update. here's the photos.

 

After deciding the brake spring tool was rubbish, I made my own.

Just a small update as I've been busy so haven't been been doing much to this.

 

Got the rear drums on, had to chamfer the edge of the shoes with a file as they were supertight.

back down on all four weels for the first time in what seems like ages! The ride height doesn't look too bad at all if you ask me. There will be 10mm hubcentric spacers going on eventually.

Then I got the front brakes all fitted.

Then fitted the new headlights, decided to take the tint off them too. They're not sitting right yet as I had to order new indicator ball thingys, and the bumper isn't fitted properly yet either. But all lights work.

And as I discovered holes in the exhaust I ordered a new one, should be here by weekend with any luck.

The old one came off with too much of a struggle thankfully.

And I have a new handbrake cable to go on before I do the exhaust, as it's a pig to do with the exhaust in place.

 

And the Mrs doesn't mind being under the car at all, she's always looking for something to do when we're at the garage. She's definitely a keeper.
