Guest gavintwopies
Well finally got my self round to stripping the exhaust manifold off and fit the new core plug then also swapped the alternator for a mk4 one, as the mk3 alternator cooling blades were catching the adjusting arm, engine now filled with water and sounds quite as but still has the cutting out and miss firing problem if revved, or the accelerator is pressed when the engine is cold still thinking it must have something to do with the cold start system???? ?? MarineIguana
Ah good ol engines make you work hard to get em working right the sods Cold start I aint even got mine plugged in so I'm no help there
Guest gavintwopies
Well had a look at the engine today and still no further forward as the car starts but will cut-out if the accelerator is pressed, then when it starts to warm through its fine and will rev up sweet got to have something to do with the cold start, So as i dont have any parts to hand to allow a swap by swap account to find the faulty sensor or part i went straight out and swapped the rear std springs to lowerd ones to cheer my self up loving the stance of the car now cant wait to see how low it will appear once the s1 kits back on. Guest gavintwopies
Well had a bit of a swat up on the old k-jet injection system to see what could be at fault with the cold start system as it turns out the cold start valve does actually work and just is not spraying when the car is cold so put up a temp wire to make it switch on when the engine is 1st started and it over fuels and cuts out also tested the thermotime switch and it just does not seem to make up a circuit even when cold tried 2 of these and they both did the same..... So with further investigation its now looking like the fuel pre-warmer in the inlet as this controls the fuel pressure during the warm up period and might not be enritching the mixture by increasing the pressure for the 1st few mins on start-up. very annoying!! Well moved onto a small wiring problem i noticed this was the side lights were on all the time when the car ignition was turned on, easy enough you might think duff bit of wiring? duff relay?? No, No, better than that the loom has had a small electrical fire it turns out from when some un-savory charctar tried to hot wire it to nick it!! Nice job too it had melted best part of the underside of the fuse box together so much so that if the keys are removed and you switch the side lights on the entire ignition system switches on and the fuel pump primes too and the whole lot is earthing out through the rear passenger side lightearth point!!! So enoughs, enough at that point the loom is coming out and im getting a mk4 xr3i loom so with this in mind the dash is also getting replaced with a mk4 unit inc. all heater blow components, steering column switches, etc, etc . Guest shaun
thats a bad bit of luck with fuse box should be keeping mk3 dash tho block looks nice and black good work
Guest gavintwopies
thats a bad bit of luck with fuse box should be keeping mk3 dash tho block looks nice and black good work Well if mk4 loom is going into car then all the plugs for the steering column switches will match the mk4's coming not mk3 i have, as well as all the switches on the mk4 dash so to keep the conversion simple I may aswell fit the dash too not to mention it already has a mk4 front end, So it will keep everything matched and will now look like a mk4 car on a private plate with a set of mk3 seats in. I hope ??

Guest gavintwopies
shame about the loom Not to worry it will get weighed in after being stripped of all useful parts (fuses clips etc) then the couple of quid will fund the 4-8 cans of carling to help the re-build. Guest gavintwopies
Well spent a few more hrs this morning fixing a few faulty wires and the starter motor died on me this morning too!!!! but had a spare off a ib5 boxed 1.8 zetec staight swap and now the car starts as it should and even rev's from cold too.........wow eh? amazing So now i know it runs its time to get cracking on the mk4 dash conversion, then central locking and after market alarm for the remote central, a new wing, fully re-brake pipe the car up for safty reasons and then fit body kit paint and on to mot and tax too. MarineIguana
At least with a Mk4 dash you will have a better chance of it having no cracks in it plus it will suit the front end of the cab with its Mk4'ness Won't be long and it will be on the road and be coming to some shows I hope
