Amazing 24 hours,having been given 8 weeks to vacate my rented lock up at the rear of local ford dealer as they are shutting down,the mechanics have done 24 hours of work on the mk5. It now has an mot,and all the silly bits that may have taken weeks have been done in a day. Besides a good. Clean and a few bits of trim its almost ready to go back on the road after 7 years. Pics to follow.

 

Nice to have ford mechanics at your bec n call hey ian ...look forward to the pics :>)

Was gutted today sun out and could not get the mk5 out of the garage,was all locked with no one working ,will have to wait for the first test drive and pictures.

Finally drove it today ,needs a little bit more setting up tho. Took it home because it's my wife's birthday and she did not know I have had it for two years in my lock up,here face says it all lol.

Mk5 running much better now but after a good test drive found out the header tank is leaking and the starting motor needs changing. So hope to sort them in the week and put some proper miles on next weekend.

Took the mk5 out for a serious 100 mile test drive yesterday, well it's crap,the engine is so underpowered, it's like turbo lag but worse. One of the older ford mechanics told me it is a common problem,won't tick over and huge flat spot,something that they could never put right,he even remembers back in the day customers demanding there money back. Well I will put up with it this year but I can see an engine transplant sooner rather than later.

There's got to be more to it than that surely? we did/do have a stalling problem on slowing for turns/junctions etc which only appeared after I straightened the throttle stop which had been bent to hold it slightly off idle. At the moment we have a choice of A, un-bent throttle stop = smooth on/off the throttle at low speeds & fairly "normal" behaviour when moving with the clutch pressed BUT with random low revs/stalling as you slow down which is not safe as you lose power steering unexpectedly, or B, bent throttle stop = no stalling BUT very jerky on/off throttle transition in lower gears & when coasting with the clutch down the revs hang at about 1500-1600ish.

 

The latter appears to have been the garage's "fix" for the issue on our car but they must have run right when they were new or Ford would never have sold any and there'd be lots of court cases where the stalling caused an accident. That being the case, I'd suggest trying what I've seen elsewhere on the forum which is replacing the plugs with a very specific brand/type that the EEC IV/CVH setup seems to "like" before condemning the engine. We're certainly going to try that, as well as doing a few substitution tests with sensors/components from a scrapyard 5B we found provided it's a 1.6.

 

There must be some problem caused by either age/maintenance (or lack thereof) that is the root of the problem, I simply don't believe Ford could have sold as many units running EFi on a CVH if the setup never worked properly from the get go...

Another thought I had and will look into on ours, is oil/vapour contamination, in the small bore pipe or the sensor itself, causing the MAP sensor to either be sluggish or go out of range

Ford mechanics say efi was a problem full stop. Cvh engine was designed with a carb in mind,hence most of the early cars,mfi was bought in as the injection system later on ,and was very successful. But efi they tell me was a nightmare from the start,they could never get the cars to tick over and could never sort out the flat spot when accellerating .

I have ordered an upgraded fuel pressure regulator to see if that will cure the flat spot. Will let you know if it improves the throttle response. Good luck with the roof.

I do agree it was far from a perfect system, and you do (or at least used to when there was more left) hear a lot of people asking about the high idle speed when coasting. I believe this could be as a result of the "fix" which must have been applied hence a lot of mechanics saying it's normal and intended to help gearchanges(!)

 

One other thing we will give a go is, whilst the throttle plate is held slightly further open by the bent stop, I'll recalibrate the TPS so it thinks the throttle is fully shut and see if that smooths anything out.

 

Thanks, the roof job doesn't look too intimidating to be fair but held up now for reasons I'll post in our own thread. Be interested to hear if you can cure the flat spot with a different FPR. How did you come to the conclusion/suspicion it's fuel pressure related? I ask because I have noticed a definite tendency on ours for it to have more of a flat spot when the tank is nearly empty and you can definitely hear the pump making a different noise (like it's working harder) probably starting about the same time the low fuel light comes on.

 

Definitely not running out as we've done 20 odd miles like this before with a jerry can in the boot whilst "calibrating" our eye to the fuel gauge

My theory on that for now is that rusty crap is getting sucked up and partially blocking the filter, then dropping back down when the pump is off, possibly causing lower fuel pressure too.

Its process or illimination i guess,read up on it and saw this advertised. It may be no better but am gonna give it a try along with a new induction kit to try and get more cold air into it. Will keep you posted. May try stephens extra long sparkplugs as well.

Now there is a product I'd buy just on the name, even if I didn't need them lol if they turn out to be the fix maybe he could make a few bob buying up the Bosch(? if I remember correctly) items and rebranding them as THE performance upgrade for EEC-IV Fords :biggrin:
