Rs Turbo Cabriolet Myth Or Legend

Found this on the internet site motorbase apparantly a RS Turbo Cab does exist

Contrary to popular belief Ford did make 500 factory produced Escort RS Turbo Cabriolets. Most people/car ads will tell you that the only way to get a turbo cab is to put the engine in an XR3i, not only is this incorrect it completely misses the point of the rare and unique RS Turbo.

All RS Turbo Cabriolets were made in 1990 of the quality German steel used in the mk 3's as opposed to all other mk 4 Escorts being made of some kind of iron-ore in England!

Only 100 cars were completed in right-hand drive format. All cars were painted a beautiful, Escort Cosworth type, purpley-blue. All cars have full leather recaro interior. They left the factory with 150bhp as opposed to the standard 132bhp for the hard-top. This was to compensate for the extra weight that all convertibles have. The front and rear bumpers, though still factory RS are slightly more sporty than standard. The car is 4" longer overall than any other mk 4 Escort!

I don't believe that. If they were produced it would have been done by a secondary party separate to ford. The purple/blue color i assume to be imperial blue. I aint ever seen more than 2 in that colour and both were sprayed badly at a later date.

The steel issue is all srange as well. All cabriolets both mk3 and mk4 were made from a partly constructed standard hatchback shell. they were sent like this to Karmann along with the unique panels. Karmann then hand built each car and added much better rust proofing than ford.

I have a full set of ford workshop manuals that shows how the mk4 hatcback becomes a mk4 cabriolet along with measurements of ever part. Even shows were to cut the hatchback shell in places to accept the new panels

This has been rumbling on for as long as Ive had cabs, It aledgedly all stems from a cab that was sold on ebay a few years ago. it was a listed as being made for the wife of one of fords MD's at the time 1990. It was in magenta red with all the RS trimmings. however digging about found that the engine was fitted by a supplying dealer rather than off the factory line. It since then been sold a few times last I saw was in 2008 and a price take of 6.5k.

Ford directly did not release any Turbo cabriolets, probably due to pricing.

However in 1989- Turbo Technics converted some cabriolets and these were sold as new cars through Ford dealers. Maybe this is where the confusion comes from. However these were regualr cabriolets, without any other special features such as Leater recaros, etc.

I have some ford dealer advertising of the Turbo Technics Escort cabriolets, dated 1989, which I'll bring along to FF.

Hope this helps!

never heard ov these being made and been into fords for 15 yrs, as for the turbo technics conversions i have heard of these so maybe this is where the confusion lies, but defo was not sold as a RS model, TT tend to turbo charge their engines a weird way as in the rs1600i and xr4i. if you wana know how many of each car there are left i found this site http://howmanyleft.co.uk/ only shows current sorn and taxed cars tho
