Alternator Not Charging.

just want some views and opinions on this, and help. :biggrin:

 

brand new battery on it, alternator looks new, new fan belt, battery still goes flat. so i disconnected the battery, took alternator off, and check there was continuaty through the wire to the battery. (cant remember the reading, but the multimeter did beep)

 

connected it back up, check chagring rate at battery when ideling. 12.40V, check it ideling with all electrics on 10.25V. i was thinking alternator, but then i remembered the battery light doesnt work on the dash. just wondering, if that light doesnt work, does it affect it from charging? i know it runs off the blue wire on the alternator, but am unsure if its the wire or bulb blown, and if its just a warning indicator.

 

Sorry for the long post, but better to explain everything so we're at the same point.

take the alternater off and get it tested

i had the same problem with my boys fiesta last week replaced battery then new alternater and maker sure the wires are put back how they should be lol

found out that the bulb for the battery light is ok, so must be wiring, does that blue wire effect the alternator from charging?

easy way to test alternatoris start the car then take the lead off the battery if it still runs then your alternator is fine{ this only works on a petrol car will not work on a diesel }

The blue wire is important to the alternator as its its live feed,..make sure its complete. if its broken it will not show the bat light, if it shows intermitantly then its making contact either with the block or to the other half,..Get it crimped n soldered together,, :icon_salut_gb:

battery light has never come on, but would a new battery last 2 months if the alternator wasn't doing anything? where abouts does the blue wire run and is it a known problem?

No matter how good the battery is. if its being constantly used without a charge it will go flat...hopefully these pics should help,..give ya an idea of where it goes

take it it goes from the alternator, to the starter motor then. but where next? its gotta get to the clocks/dials, so does it go along the bulkhead somewhere?

just a quick update, i have noticed that my sidelight and foglight symbol in the cluster doesnt work either. but the oil light does.

 

would it be a good idea to buy another instrument cluster to try?

I think you need to get the wiring loom from the alternator going back through the starter motor repaired. Most likely the wiring inside it has broken down and this is causing a lack of current to go back and charge the battery. The blue wire does go back towards the dashboard loom and most likely it has a wiring breakdown in it. You could either cut and splice it to give back voltage so that the light would show on the dashboard.

heard a screech this morning so tightened the fan belt up, and it chargers :happy001: feel like a rite idiot.

but still looking into the battery light when i get round to it

got the new cluster today, no joy :icon_cry: still no dash lights

 

so decided to check the multi plugs, connected my electric screwy where the blue wire joins the multiplug, turn the key to position 2, nothing. is there a hidden fuse/relay somewhere that i'm missing?

forget that, stopped again :angry: going to replace the alternator next.

warning bulb is just a warning, wont affect the alternator if bulbs gone, mk 3s&4s (probably all) battery + is connected straight to the alternator. 12v is not great, you should get closer to 14v

cheers mate, the only one that works is the oil warning light, but the sidelight one does come on but very fait

item 101 is instrument cluster 80-86 and 102 is 86 on, have a look at the list and see whcih warning bulbs aint working. :wacko:

right then.....

the only lights that work are the oil pressure lamp (number 8) and the indicator (number 21/22)

 

but looks like they all run off the same circuit

balls, was hoping they were all on the same side of the cluster (your sure your main beam warning doesnt work??) cos so many are out lets hope its a common fault, probably earth......

 

So easiest one to check would be the handbrake and hope if you find the fault for this one you find them all

that yuv got 21 and 22 i take it its 86 on, if so

 

handbrake warning lamp is switched on the ground side so route to lamp is

 

earth - microswitch on handbrake - bn/gn wire via ABS relay (if fitted) to diode - bg/gn to brake fluid sender - bn/y to instrument cluster.....

 

basically with handbrake on lamp 3 is earthed, you can short it or measure resistance from plug to earth with your meter. I would use a meter, and remember to put the red probe of the meter to the plug and the black to earth cos thats the only way you will, measure through the diode. If that side is all ok we know the fault lies on the other sde of the bulb(s)

guessing that mean the whole dash out then :unsure: did find that the handbrake light does come on some times, but only when the hand brake is off, if i lift it a little between the first click and the off position, it will light up, so its either poor earth on the handbrake, or the switch has had it.
