Well I have stone chiiped the spare wheel well, it will be painted inb the warmer weather. But hopefully it will mean the paint should not get as easily chipped and rust again.

IMG_0001.jpg

stone chipped the rear valence and rear quater repairs as well.

Found some surface rust in places on the floor, so before it gets any worst, will taqke it back to bar emetal and treat it. Should hopefully hold off the tim worm a little longer.....

and discovered why I had a wet carpet on the drivers foot well

IMG_0006-1.jpg

and the reasoning behind a wet carpet in the passenger foot well was because the battery tray repair when welded in, hadn't been seam sealed. So will rectify that problem.

Been making progress. Finally got the car in the air. Have taken the exhaust off. I will need a new manifold as the current one is cracked right through.

IMG_0027.jpg

There is evidence of bottoming out and scrapping. Rear springs have at times been fully compressed and each coil has been rubbing against each other

IMG_0017.jpg

The tie / trailing arm hitting the chassis leg and rubbing off the under seal

IMG_0015-1.jpg

Minor scrapping on the fuel tank

IMG_0011-1.jpg

dented fuel tank (isn't leaking)

IMG_0012-1.jpg

usual stuff on the exhaust

IMG_0009.jpg

cut off the old electric fuel pump from when an injected engine was fitted

IMG_0010-1.jpg

Rear drums and pads will be needed before it goes back on the road.

Underside of the spare wheel well once I cleaned it up a bit

22 Nov last year. Hmm not as long as I thought. The reason for my lack of progress? Well, in the main a bad back, or rather sicattica (is that you you spell the proper name for a trapped nerve?) that put me out of action for several months. Couple with cold weather, and serious lack of funds.

Anyway, I purchased a waxoyl spray kit. Thinned it down 30% with white spirits. And what a diaster that was!!!!! even with it sat in a tub of HOT water and 2 hot water bottles the nozzle still kept blocking, it went all over the place and there was a lot of wasteage. In the end the bottom of the front doors (inside), rear arches (inside) andwhole of the underside of the car where just hand brushed with black underseal.

The spare wheel well is finished and painted. As are the repair around the front windscreen. Given the engine bay a quick spray over as well where the paint was in need of titivating. Bumpers have now been sprayed satin back

i'm the first to admit my welding isn't the prettiest. but it gets the job done. Just want to get her on the road now asap. those welded patches won't be seen once the bumper is on. The intention was never to build a concours winner. I would have to agonize over every minute blemish or scratch. Which on what is going to be a fun daily driver, is a reciepe for an early grave.

Same age as mine, I notice yours has the later almost mk4 spec inner wings like mine does, that large circular push-out panel near the front of the near side inner wing if you haven't already guessed is for the mk4 windscreen washer bottle. In fact, I pushed mine out and fitted said bottle. I haven't covered that bit on my website yet (it's woefully behind the car by about 5 years now!) but can send you some pics if you want.

The RS1600i look works pretty well with these cars in red and is the look I have gone for with mine. I did try to add a photo of it but the forum didn't like the url extension or something so I've added it as an attachment instead.

Prehaps not all that original an idea but to be honest you really aren't likely to pass another mk3 in the street let alone one in the same scheme!

Smiler.

I take it your car is a carb engine or you are putting the carb engine in? As if your looking for a daily driver and worried about the reliability issue then i would strongly recommend the zetec aproach and if speed is not an issue then your deffo looking at a 1.6zetec i used to get 35mpg from our SI mk3 fezzy and the cab would not be far behind or like i did fit a 1.8 zetec this returns 30-33mpg with loads more power to boot and reliability has gone through the roof car is driven 7days a week 25miles a day minimum.

Also loving the rs1600i splitter with black bonnet and boot but bumpers are a deffo, even pc plod might have summit to say about that too???

Well, the car has been on the road now for two weeks. It didn’t go straight through first time, the hand brake needed adjusting (something I have needed to do on the last three MOT’s I have done), the n/s head light needed adjusting, but that was all.

After getting the MOT the Speedo was not working. I had forgotten to re connect the Speedo cable. The tracking was out, but I have managed to get it pretty damn close by adjusting each side half a turn at a time.

I’m not as pleased as I thought I would be getting the car back on the road. But that probably because I had to rush and cut corners, as Nathans morning ride to school was no longer available and I had to sort something. I doubt the car will ever be truly “finished” items still to be sorted are;

-Water pump has started leaking – about half a “brew” in 2 weeks

- The wind screen washer is always “live” it works even with the key not in the ignition

- The wipers don’t work at the interval setting. Only slow and fast.

- Get the tracking and balancing done properly

- Replace the oil pressure sensor / switch as it was never connected before I started to work on the car. I did over 1200 miles before I started stripping it. So the fact that once I did re connect it the oil warning light stays lit is fingers crossed because of a faulty pressure sensor /switch

Once I get some time and decent weather I will get some update photographs posted up.
