First a quick bit of back ground to explain how I got to where I am,Initally I got into my XR tin tops, rather than RS turbo's due to insurance and their habit to be expensive when they do go pop. My first being this

SDC10256.jpg

and got tweeked to this

SDC10382.jpg

and sadly ended up like this

burnt10.jpg

so with the insurance money I bought another MK34 this time in white, which had rather a lot of this

IMG_0036.jpg

so got rid, and bought this

b]The Plan?[/b]

Well initally it was to be my second car, but since losing my company car allowance, and no longer needing to do a 300 mile round trip per week to the head office in Banbury. I have decided that over winter I shall prepare this car to be my daily driver. Am I mad? Can these cars be a daily driver without disolving like a slug in a salt bath? It will live in a garage, and do the school run each day, as I work from home. So won't be kept outside in all weathers.

My dead line is the 1st of April 2011 to complete the work, get it MOT'd and taxed, it does have a current MOT till april 2011 already.

My high level plans are;

- fix any rust

- fully rust proof the vehicle

- make it as water tight as possible

- service

- fix any niggles

Jobs already identified are;

  • remove electric fuel pump, (this is a carb engine)
  • remove wiring loom and either replace with correct loom, or trim off the "excess", it would seem at some point this car had a turbo lump fitted
  • fix heater blower, has stopped working
  • intermitant setting for front wipers has stopped working
  • rear demister has stopped working
  • got a leak the drivers foot well gets wet
  • rear lights don't always work
  • oil light stays dimly lit some times with ign off
  • dashboard lights don't all work
  • sort out something for breather from the valve cover, as the carb has an K&N filter, so the breather is currenlty venting t the air

with mie the rear lights it is the usual ford trick, brakes lights are sometimes dim, and when my lights are on, the rear lights work, when I press the brake on the offside the rear lights goes out but the brake light does not light up. probably an earth issue. But the bulb holder is bust as well and is held on with duct tape. So that probably isn't helping matters.

All the wiring is pulled through to the bulk head on the interior

now this is why I am getting a wet carpet. It has had a new battery tray, but they just placed the new part over the whole and welded it in

Please be gentle, been pondering what to do with my MK3 escort cab. And been playing in photoshop. Could you let me know what you think, and come up with alternative ideas

I can't afford any replacement alloys, and clover leafs are getting very rare, so don't want to sel them to fund replacements. So that only leaves painting them

Red oxide / red primer

redoxidewheels.jpg

cream

creamwheels.jpg

Dark grey / ananthrite (spelling?)

anathritewheels.jpg

dary grey / black with red high lights, I tihnk it looks to busy, and the red hasn't come out quite right

would like to go bumperless if my welding body work skills are up to it

bumperless.jpg

bumperlessrear.jpg

also thought about adding black to the centre of the car

bumperlessBlackbonnet.jpg

bumperlessrearblackboot.jpg

and maybe adding the deeper front air dam from an RS1600i, but they are rare unless I can find a fibre glass copy, with maybe a lace paint on the bonnet and boot???

Few ideas look okay. Honest opinion would be to go for the deeper front splitter but dont stop there. Go for the full RS16i rep.

If you do want a black bonnet then a Carbon one would give you the look you're after and be super cool to boot.

Not to sure about bumperless, it might just look like the bumpers have been nicked. lol..

with the wheels, white looks cool, but a sod to clean, red does look good but depends if your brave,

the front looks ok with no bumper, but id leave one on the rear, and defo a splitter on the front, black bonnet and boot is ok, i wanted to do that about a year ago on mine but never did in the end, if your gonna do it do both, one or the other will just look like its been in a accedent,

off topic- sent the bulb holders today!

Sorry for the lack of progres, I have been suffering with a trapped nerve in my back, which is making my whole left leg go numb. Taking anti inflamitories and pain killers. Managed to grind back the paint, and treat with rust killer, started welding and......

ran out of welding wire, sigh. Got to wait to pay day now.

Guest br1gg5y

God has it been that long! right some updates. A pulled back and going away for the half term has hindered progress somewhat. But enough excuses

Rear valance patched up. Please remember these 2 patches will eventually be hidden by the rear bumper.

IMG_0005.jpg

The holes around the rear light opening sorted

IMG_0006.jpg

IMG_0007.jpg

The spare wheel well patched up (ideally a fresh panel would be welded in, but I don't trust my welding skills for the spare wheel no to fall through the floor the first spped bump I hit, and I cannot afford to pay anyone,. It will do for now, this won't be visible and this is no concours car)

IMG_0008.jpg

Rear quarter repair

IMG_0010.jpg

And I have been spending some cash. new front grilles to replace my old ones. They will need painting grey to match though

IMG_0011.jpg

IMG_0013.jpg

New sill trims

IMG_0015.jpg

and the correct gear stick centre piece to match my dash

You have a fair bit of rust there. I would suggest having a really good look and clean down underneath before you go any further. If all is good get busy with the waxoyl injecting everywhere before the trim is put back. That will make the car last

In terms of looks i'd go for the S1 kit. Plus maybe a pearl silver on the rims.
