Hi ppl, still having probs with my steering :icon_cry:

Its all over the place....again!!

Its had new:

Wishbones (With balljoints)

Anit-roll rubbers

Anti-roll link arms

2 New bolts that hold balljoin in position

Ive had it tracked up 5 times in as many months and its really p***in me off :icon_cry:

Maybe steering rack or column??

Suspension is standard, 17'' alloys MK5 1.6i efi

cheers mick :icon_salut_gb:

Ive only had the 17's on for a few months, had 15'' rs2000 Mk6 wheels on before the 17's and it was the same then!

Ive changed the usual suspect bits but its no better :icon_cry:

I know a new steering rack and column will be expensive :icon_cry:

Maybe the suspension??

Cheers mick :icon_salut_gb:

When u say all over the palce do u mean the car actually wanders around or does the steering wheel move (shake up n down or wobbly side to side0?....Does the wheel sit straight when the front wheels are forward or is it on an angle..ie a half a turn left or right...Also has it had new steering colum bushes..as this can cause adverse wheel wobbly

hi ppl the steering wheel doesnt move until (Feels like someone is pushing car side to side) u hit a slight bump or camber or even a piece of grass....lol

then u have to fight for control.....and im not kiddin!

there is a slight looseness when u try and drive in a straight line, then one of the front wheels tends to grab and ur off....headin towards a hedge or summat :icon_cry:

Hi.

I hope you don't mind me contacting you but you seem to know what your talking about, my steering is very similar to some of the symptoms in this forum especially the part where the wheels are striaght and then steering wheel is on a slight angle, could you please advise me on what the prolem might be.

Cheers in advance

Well it could be a few things...Firstlly what mk is 3,4,5,6?.has it been lowered or had any form of knock

Has the tracking been allterted? as when the ends are adjusted they tend to pull the wheel out of kilter..this is the most common cause,..

does the wheel wobble when driving or does the car wander without any real input

Hi Chris

mine is a mk4, not sured if it is lowered only owned a few months, its on 17's, iv not touched the tracking or anything to do with the steering, the only thing I have done recently is change a tyre,

the steering wheel is out by only a couple of inches,

when driving at around 40/50mph there is a rather bad wobble from the steering.

Hope you can help

Cheers

Andy

Does the wobble pass if u go over 40/50? sounds to me like the wheel may need balencing amd also an allignment check wouldnt go amiss...That should tell you if any of ya trackrod ends are worn,..alse check the the sterring coulum bushes..if the wheel moves up and down and side to side a lot then chgances are i that thats collapesed

my cars immpossible to drive over 50mph as last time i hit a bump and the car vered across two lanes of traffic.

so i can kinda sympathise with u in that way.

mines not fixed yet as engines not running but we found my tracking was out and my suspension was f***ed. the last 3 coils on the springs are stuck together.

dunno if theyre something worth checking

to be honest sounds like to me your front shocks are on there way out and the wheels are not staying in contact with the road and boucing have you had the shocks tested any signs of leaks

i had a similar prob on my old Mk2 mondeo when i upped from 15 to 17inch rims and i put it down to the lower profile and extra width tyres trying to stay in full contact with the road and hunting for a flat surface ( absolut bloody nightmare on the motorways when ya get deep lorry ruts!!! )

Dunno if this will help but thought id add my bit :big_wave:

now i know this sounds daft but i done it once on my mk4, have you had the track rod ends off i once in my wisdom put them back on upside down (ok you can stop laughing) the ends are tapered but they fitted so in my haste put them on. the car was ok untill about 40 then all over the place, i had the tracking done then drove round the block and it was miles out and it wasn't till i went to scrap yard to get another steering rack that i spotted the problem so just have a quick check.

Dont know if this helps, but i had a similiar steering problem..... had the rear shocks changed and problem completely solved... did manage to get a look at the old rear shock and there was no tension in it whatsoever, flopped straight downwards... just thought id mention it in case it helped neone xx
