Guest bigsal
hi , I have got my inherited 1991 Escort Cab with 37000 miles on clock up & running new battery tyres & MOT after 19 years sitting in a garage, had its 36000 mile service at local ford dealer in August 1994 and in a few months I will take it back for the 42000 service , got to keep the full service history log up to date!! It drives really well , accelerates hard all the electrics work its like a brilliant brand new car EXCEPT , when I press hard on the brakes I could then write a forum posting before any appreciable slowing occurs. is it just that the brakes are not comparable to modern cars even tho everything else is or is there something I can do to beef them up. The mechanic who can and got her running is a really good guy says its just the brakes weren't so good then , any suggestions
Guest kenny stag
Just because a car is 19 years old, does not mean the brakes are not up to stopping the car. But like you say, if it has been sat in a garage for 19 years and not moved, you would expect the brakes to be shit, brake cylinders ,master cylinder, servo, all sticking at worse seized, also check all round for fluid leaks, don't forget to check the brake pipes. badger
i had a simular type of problem with a 1996 model once that had sat in the garage for a few years and it turned out to be the front flexible hoses had perished and in effect closed the inner pipe hole to next to nothing, so the pedal felt right but the calipers were not moving far and the brakes were not working fully, once i had replaced them all was good .now i'm not saying this is the problem but might be worth a look. Ian71
I would sugest a complete overhaul of the braking system,as said even if its been dry stored all them years components fail and it would make sense to have it checked over by an expert. f40 cab
After 19 years you need new fluid! The fluid collects moisture which is not good for braking!before you drain get help And before your change it check for leaks fluid/air. Mines a 1990 and brakes where good. Ive used them alot since owning car.
