Basilbear Posted September 16, 2011 Share Posted September 16, 2011 Hi, I have replaced Skippy's (he's a Mk4 Xr3i 1.6) fuel pump recently and managed to get a new bosch one off ebay. gingergman Posted September 16, 2011 Share Posted September 16, 2011 if you can get a bosh one then do, they will be expensive tho. i changed mine, got one off ebay, cost about 30-40 quid and is perfect, only trouble i had was making sure i got the right one as it was listed as for a mk3 and loads of other cvh engines, but the mk4 is the same. after fitting it it was very noisey but after it ran for a while it did go quiet, Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Hi Ginger, Will look out for a bosh type, Modern cars have electric fuel pumps and you never hear those, I was hoping someone had managed to fit a modern pump from a different car. Would be cheaper as I could have gone to breakers for it. I am trying to get around to fixing most of the problems before the weather turns, I dont have a gararge just a small drive. chaz Posted September 17, 2011 Share Posted September 17, 2011 Modern cars have their fuel pump in the tank, even some mk4's have the pump in the tank. I replaced mine with a bosh pump and the only time I hear a very slight noise is when I turn the ignition on, once the engine is running I cannot hear it anymore. But I like this car. Its early days yet, I am still trying to sort the inside of the car out. Guest El87cabi Posted September 25, 2011 Share Posted September 25, 2011 Yeah, unless the cage is rotten, ford's replacement isn't cheap at all, when i bought the pump for my late Mfi i almost fainted when i got a price for a new cage off them too. As far as i'm aware you can fit the later internal fuel pump but obviously you need the later fuel tank too plus as chaz said it's a lot easier to get to on the Mfi Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Guest Mk4 Kenilworth Posted May 19, 2012 Share Posted May 19, 2012 Hi Eggsy, I've just bought an SS bracket from Autospecialist and I'm in the process of fitting it to my MK4 and it's total pig of a job!!. The main plate is located in 2 places; spare wheel well (easy to get to) and a chassis beam which is impossible to get inside of. I can't even get my little finger in one of the holes to hold the locknut. How on earth did you do it? I'm in the process now of glueing the locknut and spacer to a spanner where i'l try to slide it inside then along the beam. Or is there something obvious i'm missing? gingergman Posted May 19, 2012 Share Posted May 19, 2012 use a flat head screwdriver and push against the thread of the bolt to keep the bolt still, this will allow you to get the nut on, then when its on enough swap for pliers (under the nut) it shouldnt move when it bites and goes tight. Estimated time 2 hours.....Actual time 5 hours. Anyway attached is a pic. The photo makes it look grubby but it's just my oily finger marks, the dark patches are rust treatment that i did at the same time. Guest Mk4 Kenilworth Posted June 25, 2012 Share Posted June 25, 2012 TOP TIP! If replacing a fuel pump for a MK4 mfi, ignore the instructiuons that states the positive terminal is the bigger. After wasting 2 hours and blowing 3 FP fuses the smaller terminal was positive. (Finally got it running 3 hours later after noticing a +ve casting next to the small terminal) TOP TIP2! Before telling your missus you'll only be 30 minutes doing a straight foward job, double your estimate and add an another couple of hours. Went on holiday for a few days last weekend. Took the XR3i out as you do because it was the tail end of the heatwave! Checking the car over night before we were due to drive back home making sure everything was safe. Then noticed this! The bolt has just snapped because of rust. Anyone know of a replacement?
