Wheel Refurb

ok so its probably been covered a million times but im starting a fresh thread anyway :punish:

im gonna refurb the s2 rs turbo alloys on my car. whats the best way to go about it? the rim itself is ok, just a minor bit of filling required, the alloys tho have been painted before and are flaking and look sh*te.

i was gonna do em black, or orange, or green or something stupid like that but sense has got the better of me and im sticking to silver!

i want the brightest silver available, like the silver on rs softspokes? where can i get it? will i be able to achieve a decent finish with rattle cans? and is it just regular paint and laquer i need or wheel specific paint?

if necessary i can pop the tyres off the rims at college although im a little sceptical about fully removing the tyres as i dont want to damage my fresh paint refitting the tyres.

c'mon guys i bet a few of you have tackled this, you must have some tips, do's and dont's for me!

cheers

preperation is key mate you need to sand & repair the wheels first. i did my rs wheels with spray cans & they looked very good. you can get different types of mettalic colours i used the chrome spray but you can get a silver looking one & a gold one too! just take your time to do them and i'm sure they will turn out fine

i did my rs alloys, link - http://www.escortcabrioletclub.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/18422-hmmm-what-colour-wheels/

its better to take the tyres off, sand fully arount the lip of the rim then when fitting the tyres then paint wont flake, i used rattle cans, its hard to find a decent silver for wheels IMO, go to your local paint place to see what they can do, make a good silver in a can for ya for about the same price as crappy halfords, just make sure there prepped properly and take your time with the paint, mine took ages to do but often got commented on about where i got them refurbed lol

i left the tyers on mate just did a masking tape and newspaper job on them. it was the first time i sprayed wheels mate and they turned out better then i thought they would. the chrome was a good colour to use a couple of friends asked where i sent them to be re-furbed and was surprised when i told them i did them! gun metal grey is a nice colour my mate has some that colour and the look spot on. sorry got no pics as i sold them when i got my 17" alloys

very smart indeed oille!

stally, teah normal rattle cans will do the job, no need to primer just make sure there fully rubbed down, then lacquer if you wanna, with gloss colours such as gloss white theres no need unless you wanna, depends how shiney you want em!

and in my experiance its best to take the tyres off :salut_gb:

or if you cant be bothered to take the tyres off...use foil lids (chinese takeaway style) between the tyre and rim so no over spray.

I mate I refurb wheels for a living so if I can help or advise just ask. Just to clear up a couple of things for you, you can use normal lacquer if you are not spraying any exposed metal. And if I was you I would remove the tyres, as you are trying to do it on the cheap I guess, and this adds to the expense. Get a local tyre shop to break the beads of the tyres but not remove them, that way you have plenty of room to work, and you dont have to pay for refitting or rebalancing as the tyre will be in the same position on the wheel once youve finished. Saves you ££££ and allows you to get to the curbed areas. And yes do use primer if you want it to last, can of etch primer at halfords is a tenner, its all in then prep!
