Relocating Bigcab Fuel Filler Cap

It was always a pain filling up, worrying about catching bodywork with the nossel as it was soooooo far in the hole before the fuel pipe started. The locking cap was a paint to get out too. Loads of reasons really. My original idea was to simply have it reruited to in the boot but couldnt decide where to mount it so we've decided to go for one of those Mocal aero style caps in the panel between the rear lights and the exhausts. Just need to remember which one is the fuel hole and which ones are the exhaust. lol.

Anyway, I've filled the cap so there's no going back now. lol. The filler neck is temporarily in the boot waiting for the Mocal cap to arrive.

The black hole as it was.

I cut down and used the original flap as a base, sitting about 10 to 12 mm lower than the bodywork.

Then filled the gap using fibreglass for strength

Once dry, I ground away any high points then covered the lot with filler.

Sanded back using a block to get the level, filled any low bits and repeated.

Then I covered with a bit of primer. Although it was shite primer, ret thin and ran like bitch.

Looks really neat m8, i do like the look of this cab, and the colour.

I dont know wether having the filler that close to the exhaust system is wise though, but i also think there may be a british standard regulation or ncap something or other for the position of a filler cap , and the back panel could be a grey area because of a larger chance of fire risk in a rear end accident, if i can find anything out i will let you know, i might be getting mixed up with some motor racing regulation though..

Hi mate, did you ever think about inside the driver door shutter?? they look good there and out the way.

either way it will be different and keep the sides alot smoother.

as for refil and exhaust risks, it could be a pain if you refil and spill or squirt fuel over the exhaust whilst filling up. that could be a disaster. and in extreme heat. it may not even have to catch the exhaust to ignite.

but for inside the boot. either plate off the fuel pipe to keep it away from heat or use exhaust heat wrap on the fuel pipe or exhaust pipes to help minimise the risks.

good work mate

I'm not too worried about the fire risk, I'm sure it'll be fine. In that picture the pipe is quite close to the exhaust, but it will be closer to the lights when its finally done. I've oprdered a genuine FIA motorsport filler cap and I've ordered the accompanying FIA approved steel reinforced filler hose to replace the stainless pipe thats temporarily there now. This will be 100% sealed so there'll be no fumes leaking near the exhaust.

The temerature from the exhaust shouldn't cause a problem either, the route of the middle section of the exhaust (standard) runs withing a couple of cm from the fuel tank itself so I'm sure the back boxes being over 20cm away from the filler hose should be okay.

Hose and cap should be here next couple of days so I'll get another pic up when its all fitted.

Only just managed to get photos.

New fuel cap new in rear panel and you cant even tell there was a filler on the side.

The neck is very flexible and goes with a nice curve straight down and through to the tank.

I'm really happy with it.

Yes mate. We needed a change. I've been working my ass of to get it done.

It was either white, ST orange, or ST green and the white won. lol

The chromes have been replaced too. We bought some 19" lenso as a stop gap. The chromes are for sale and as soon as they've gone we're going to 'Image wheels' to have some spits made.

We like the lights better, going to colour the indicator and reverse RED when we get chance. Those 3D ones were okay 5 years ago but they're a little chavy now. lol

I'll get a photo inside the boot to show how it goes.

It looks good and now its in we have no concerns at all about the exhaust being in there. The filler neck is still pritty cold after 10 mins running.
