  1. Hi all,

When I started my car up the battery light did not come on. Checked bulb itself, circut board behind instrumrent cluster and tested the alternator to starter motor wires for continuity. All these ok.

One thing I did notice was my alternator mounting bracket that had been refurb'd and repainted, was not conducting electricity. The coating is not ordinary paint and is very tough. I couldn't get a positive continuity reading fron it. Therefore it appears the alternator cannot earth to the engine and chassis.

Could this earthing issue explain why the battery light does not come on with the ignition switched on? Will I need to earth the alternator to the chassis to make the bulb work?

I even tried an old alternator by connecting up the the red and blue wire to it, but leaving the alternator on the floor (i.e. not connected to the car or to any earth on the car). But again the battery light did not come on.

  2. Hi all,

Slowly but surely Tori (all blue) is on her way to being MOT'd.

Last weekend was spent re bleeding the brakes. Now the car actually stops.

But the car idles too low and stalls. Will be cleaning out the ISCV this weekend and adjusting base idle, to hopefully sort this problem.

Secondly the battery light does not come on. Looks like my new Bosch alternator may be a dud. Will be connecting my old one up to verify the alternator is at fault and buy a new one again  Lucky it comes out easy!

Then hopefully I can drive her out the garage for a wash and MOT, ready for FF

  3. don't buy it off ebay, prices are a joke.

last time i brought some from Ford it was 4 quid. It's a special order thing they have to order from daventry, but should take no longer than 1 week.

  4. ditto that about the electrician.

it sounds you may have an earthing fault, I guessing this because you say the reversing lights and aeriel do not work.

Remove the boot trim panel and check the earth connection. May be worthwile to unscrew the earth connection and clean up the contacts.

  5. Nice lovely clean cab you have there, I like the two tone White over Grey.

It's great to see you look after the car well. Do give the car a good hose down underneath too, especailly in the arches, ideally with a pressure washer. Its common for mud to become stuck in between the gap between the wheelarches and bodykit.

Are you a member of the XR owners club? Spotted sticker in windscreen.

  6. The ones you have are RS accessory ones. Available from main dealers for cars without the spotlamps as standard. These are identifiable by the black mounting protuding at front, at the 12 and six o clock positions. Usually with the Ford logo in the centre of the lens.

The ones yours would have had when it left the factory would be carello ones. These have the black plastic backing, flush fit to the lens.

They are still available from Ford, but you would need the mounting brackets as well.

Have a look at the RS owners club forum. There is a thread there on S2 standard spotlights, which has some clear photos.

  7. Firstly check that the fluid level in the pump is sufficient.

Then get someone to listen to the pump whilst you press the roof switch (with ignition in position 2). If you can hear the motor running, the fault is likely to be a broken plastic cog in the pump. Easy to fix and a repair kit is available from VW dealers (not Ford) for £17.

If no noise from the motor, the problem will be electrical, check the relays and fuses by the pump.

  8. Useful tip if it is the roof motor cog.

This is a known problem with the later (black bodied) power roof pumps, fitted to later (Oct 1996) onwards MK6 Escort Cab models, & 1997 onwards VW Cab models.

A repair kit is available, but don't pay £40 ++ for it. VW dealers will supply you the exact repair kit for £17. Ford being idots do not sell this repair kit.

For reference, the part number for the repair kit is 1EO 871 687.

Oh and buy some roof oil from VW too. Its only £7 for a 1L bottle.
