Guest 2steppa
Hi all. My cabby has been running pretty good lately (apart from the rear trailing arm snapping!) but tonight I was just setting out and after about 10 minutes of running fine doing about 50 and it just stops - nothing, no power like it's run out of fuel...... (It has half a tank full btw). I try to start it the fuel pump makes the usual whirr and it fires gets no higher than 1000 rpm makes a few backfire bangs and stops. Any ideas what may have suddenly happened? Cheers. Edited December 16, 2015 by 2steppa
Ian71
Silly question but gotta ask first, did you recently fill up with fuel,if so are you sure you did,nt put diesel in ?
Ian71
If not that have you checked all the leads from the coil pack to the spark plugs, gotta do all the basics first realy
Guest 2steppa
Hi, No, recently (today) put some super unleaded in but definitely used the right pump! (easy mistake I know) It's weird it was running perfectly no hints of a problem or lumpiness and suddenly........ gone. Like I say it will start and run up to 1000 ish rpm but throttle won't push it any higher it's banging and spluttering and then dies out and stops. Is it likely that the fuel line or filter is blocked or is that uncommon? The pump sounds the same as ever, but could it be priming but not running on? I'm not much of a mechanic so excuse my ignorance :-)
Guest 2steppa
I'll have to get it towed to the garage in the morning, and fingers crossed fixed by the weekend..
Stephen Bearded Minky Hill
I've got a chip plugged into my ecu, it came loose once and was just hanging out. That caused it to die and pop and bang when it was running. If not like Ian said, plugs, leads, coil pack, wrong fuel. Check around the fuel rail for some small vacuum hoses. Then check the timing marks for piece of mind.
Guest 2steppa
OK seems it's the fuel pump again - now I need to try and get hold of the in-tank pump/sender unit. Not an easy task it seems :-(
Stephen Bearded Minky Hill
I've had numerous problems with my pump. If its the seals in the flexible thing between the pump and the metal pipe get rid of it and put a piece of fuel hose in place. I did this and it's fine. I also had the black box pop on the underneath of the metal plate. I disconnected it and soldered and heat shrunk the wires to the pump wires. Again it's fine lol
Ian71
Is yours a mk5 1.6 cvh if so i managed to get a new in tank pump for mine. Let me know and i will dig out the details,it was quite reasonable in price to, i think a ford one was £300 if you could still by them, but i think i only paid £50 or less. Guest 2steppa
Mines a MK4 1990 on a G plate - I need the whole sender / float / pump assembly and can't seem to locate one anywhere :-( If I can't get one then that's it - the car will be sold for resto or parts as a non runner which would be criminal given the condition of it,
Stephen Bearded Minky Hill
Who has said that the pump is the problem? The symptoms you describe don't sound like a pump problem to me. Have you taken the fuel pipe off the regulator to see if there is any pressure? Mines a 90 on a "g". And it's turbo'd now with the same pump I described previously. Don't want you to end up breaking it if it can be mended.
Guest 2steppa
The garage said it's the pump, it pumps when you start from cold and then the flow becomes erratic the longer it's left running. It did make a louder than usual whirring sound a while back whilst it was running which it didn't normally do, only when you turn the key on. It was making a 'singing' whirring sound while the engine was running and the switch on priming sound had changed sometimes a healthy buzz and sometimes a laboured grind. Here is the old gal - would be a shame as you say.
Stephen Bearded Minky Hill
By the sounds of it you don't need the whole pump set up. Only the pump itself. This can be removed and an aftermarket or secondhand pump from a mk5 or 6 fitted in place.
Stephen Bearded Minky Hill
Xr2i and fiesta turbo ones are the same as well

Guest 2steppa
I'll have a look but the garage seem to think the existing one has been bodged to use a different pump in the past and as a result the proper one that arrived is no longer suitable!!! A right royal pain.
Ian71
Might be worth having a look for a replacement tank with pump still in(second hand)
Guest 2steppa
Good idea Ian. The pump/sender complete unit seems impossible to locate on it's own.
