Guest Chris May
Hi everyone, firstly I'm sorry my first post is to ask for help but this problem is really annoying me. I've had my 1997 1.8 zetec cabriolet for a couple of weeks now and I've sorted a few silly little problems with it and really enjoy driving it but unfortunately it has one problem I just haven't been able to solve up-to now. The car has a misfire or maybe more accurately a stutter under load between 2 and 3k rpm. It pulls fine in all gears before and after that small rev range. Until a few nights ago it idled very low when hot and would almost stall if you revved it then let off as it dropped revs to below 500rpm before raising them back to 750 ish. My mate cleaned the idle control valve a couple of nights ago and this solved the near stalling problem but it now ticks over at about 1000rpm and still has a lumpy idle. It has had a new set of plugs, leads and air filter since I got it and a new fuel filter was fitted the same night the idle control valve was cleaned. The old fuel filter was filthy. We have checked the crankcase breather and it appears ok and the valve on the end was not blocked. I've had the battery disconnected for approx 9 hours since the above work to reset the ECU. Any ideas will be gratefully received as although the car is very drivable it really is doing my head in. Thanks all!
allblue
Hi and welcome Without wanting to have a guess, I'd get engine diagnostics run on the car and see if that picks out any faults. But maybe have you thought about the coil pack?
badger
coil packs are a real common fault on zetecs might be worth a look
Guest Chris May
Thanks, I have had diagnostics on the car and no faults came up but changing the coil sounds a good idea, my mate has a spare in his tool box so I'll try and get it tomorrow. Vincygav
Also check the resistance out on the crankshaft position sensor. Next other sus is the lambda sensor. Check resistance of it also.
danmk4escort
well if its a zetec engine probably 1.8 try the tappets as they had a issue with over filling and not shutting the valves propaly ending up with missfires
Guest Chris May
Sorry for the long absence, I changed the coil but that made no difference, its going to my mates garage on Wednesday to get put on a more thorough diagnostics machine and he is also going to check the cat as he suspects that may be past its best. Interesting advice on the tappets I'll mention that to him. Edited February 24, 2014 by Chris May
Guest martinkettering
I had this on my 1.8 replaced coil pack as it was new with old coil pack still the same, for some strange reason i decided to check ecu and found it had been repaired at some point, luckily the fault was missfiring which was written ob a label on ecu, swapped it over for another ecu and ran fine.
