Hi all you nice people,I have a 1989 mk4 with MFI engine, the tappets are getting a bit on the noisey side, what do you recommend the work to sort them out.

Cheers

if you've not changed the oil recently do that 1st,after that........whip the rocker cover off, take off all 8 rockers/followers,change the tappets, refit everything, job done..........60mins max

I agree with escort si 130 - try Wynns hydraulic valve & lifter treatment lubricant and a engine flush and fresh oil would do them good too

Myself in the past ive took them all out and popped the springs and bearings out and give them a clean in gunk and thats made them quieter etc (you have to prime them tho before they go back in)

resurrecting an old topic - Our P reg 1800 ghia has just developed tappet noise.

Question is, can we wait until the service in January to sort it, or will it cause damage if we do?

My wife uses the car daily, but only on very short runs.

Cheers

hi stag I just replaced mine just check cam and rockers for where . if worn replace them it would be pointless if you just changed the lifters. And torque nuts on rockers to the wright settings . mine sounds good and runs good now
