Timing Out Possibly?

Right I went to check the timing on my engine as its been a pain in the rear and went to turn it over and it what i presume to be a backfire into the metering unit (plenty of smoke lol ).

So I checked the cam with the dizzy arm and it looks to be where it should but was wondering if it could be out as i don't really want to jump out of my skin again brown trousers are not cool

you checked both TDC marks mate?

Yeah both look in the right place I'll get a picture up after i have had something to eat might make it easier for you to say yes or no to weather its right or not

What cam you running?

I wish i knew mate, but it does have a timing mark that someone has made on the bottom pully so it could be running a non standard cam

The one on the bottom will not change only the one on the head will need dialing in if it's a piper / Kent etc if standard cam is in then top timing mark should be used, pull a spark plug out and turn the crank over with a 19mm spanner and make sure there's no resistance :-) ding forget the crank will turn twice for every 1 turn on the cam

have you had the leads off as that could make it fire back into the metering unit and i take it this is cvh and not zetec

have you moved the bottom pulley round so that you can take pic of it or is that how it lines up with cam on tdc mark?

having the same problem with mine at the moment

had someone come and check the timing and it is fine . still cant get it to run though i have a spark fuel etc

today i changed over another k jetronic unit and still wont fire up . seems like it could be overfueling to cause it to backfire like that

Yeah two of my plugs were soaked and that mark is TDC but moved else where so its easier to see i think but the car did run a few weeks ago but didn't idle very well and the throttle cable got a bit stuck so replaced them and hasn't run since even changed metering units

if the car was running but not idling then it will be something else m8 not timming

I don't know what else to change now to be honest its had new dizzy,arm,leads,plugs,metering unit and fuel pump I just want to drive it and its driving me insane not being able to find the root cause of the problem, but I will get there even if it takes months cars too good to bin

Id be tempted to whip the head off and check everything inside as if you have changed everything outside...doesn't the mfi have a fuel computer maybe try swapping that out. Just some guesses

Would suggest you check the following first

 

- Check leads are correctly fitted between dizzy cap and plugs. Correct order. Remove each plug. Check gap and test by earthing with engine turning over.

 

- Remove the injecters but leave them connected. Place them all in jars. Remove air filter. Create a hotwire connecting to fuel pump. Start pump for 15 seconds and check spray pattern and amount of fuel in each jar after time. Theres a ford technical page on the net that will give you amount of fuel that should be delivered in a certain time. If not in limits the fuel prssure should be checked and adjusted with shims. If not possible to get pressure check lines and pump.

 

- if still does not run and all is ok. Pressure test the engine to see if there is any indication of internal faults. bent valves. holed pistons etc.

Most of what I said was for Ollie btw. Must have got confused.

 

Would still do the fuel test though on yours and worth checking the dizzy cap and rotor arm. You either have too much fuel or missed spark stoping it being burnt.

have you chequed the choke not stuck on try damp start get someone to turn it over take off the air filter and spray it in the air intake if is got spark it will fire if not id have head off if its a mk3 or early mk4 it may have lead valve seats still
