Not sure on the megasquirt I have looked into it and although you might get the box cheapish all the other bits and peices soon add up to nearly what you would pay for a propper system. Ive also heard that Megasquirt isnt so hot for getting the car running nice and smoothly, no point going to all this effort for the thing to run like a bag of nails. Im chatting to a guy about a DTA S80 for a reasonable price should give me the peice of mind Im looking for and has plenty of support and backup.

The progress has been slow over the last month, Ive been a bit disheartened by the management issues and the other management has instructed me to fit the new bathroom we bought back in june! so now thats in well kinda I have been out and had a bit of a play.

I have moved the engine up and tilted it back considerably. this has made the driveshafts slightly off center of the hubs its not a miassive amount so shouldnt be too detrimental! Fingers crossed! On the plus side I have given myself an extra 50-60mm of ground clearance so I will now be able to negotiate twigs in the road and perhaps even the odd speed bump! Tilting the engine has meant re doung the engine mounts again and Ive only got one done so far but shouldnt take long to get the others made up.

Anyway here are a few photos so you can see for yourself!

I have at last got myself out of the little saulk I was having over the engine management! Ive bitten the bullet and got myself an Omex 710! Just got to drag myself out into the garage and get the new engine mounts finished off, then i can get stuck into wiring it up and sorting all the other little bits and bobs! Unfortuantely I have also got to tile the bathroom (in exchange for spending so much extra on the car!) but once thats done Ill be able to get stuck in, maybe Ill sneak out before!

Anyway hope to have it all mounted up by the end of the month, other half allowing! and then for the difficult part!!!

still think you should have another crack at then woild and angle of the shafts, if they are sitting off, say goodbye to the gearbox bearings in no time, and then you have traction and handling issues

even if you have to design mounts straight from nothing, instead of modifying ones to fit, i would be looking at dropping

the engine, having it hanging off the crain, untill you got it sitting in line ( no angles )then would use axles, or jacks to support it, check the shafts are in line and true, or more power will destroy them

then make the first mount i would start at the bulkhead one,

but to be fair, its only my opinion, and your project

news would be good. i wanted to know if this was gonna work too.

also regarding the gearbox and hub alignment......don't forget that when a car is sat up off its wheels the suspension is gonna drop making the alignment all wrong. happens with all cars. you need to set the alignment up whilst the car is on wheels and down to earth. the shaft joints give the car a fair amount of play which will reduce your bearing wear TBH

This is a massive build. I had the same idea for my Escort Gti. I got a few quotes which were all coming out at around 6k plus VAT. Nothing fits as its a volve engine and box. The management as your found out is too complicated and requires an aftermarket system.

Best of luck mate. The torque the engine delivers is brilliant and should make an excellent fast road car if you can finish it

Nice to see that people are still looking at this!

I have in fact made some progress over the last few weekends! The engine now sits about 100mm clear of the ground and the sump doesnt hit the ground when i bounce on the front! I had considered that the alignment is differnt with the wheels on the ground but thanks for the reminder!!! The driveshafts now line up, well much better than before at least and i think now close enough! certianly cant move the engine back anymore! Have had to do some fairly serious mod work to the chassis legs grind back some of the gearbox housing and build 4 new engine mounts from sctracth! I think had it still hit the ground I would be writting a memorial notice for this project!

I will take some pics and post them some time this week.

So now its all sat in the bay nicely next job I have is to plumb and wire it all up and make the custom shafts! Trust me that all sounds easier than it is! Im learning the hard way that nothing is ever simple with this! but im hoping to keep up the progress!

I think I mentioned already but have a full Omex 710 management system waiting to slot in when its ready so appart from wiring it I also have to get it mapped. Im probably going to take it to Torque of the Devil as they are fairly close are and Omex supplier so should know what they are doing. May get a start up map put on by a local firm though to get it up there.

Anyway keep watching and Ill post pics and further progress as it happens :-)

WOW what an epic task you have there, i take my hat off to you, and those brackets you have manufactures look the biz, on the near side mount are you going to drill and bolt that straight thru the chassis rail for extra strength c/w a top plate to spread the weight ?

Hi Guys, Just a final update... I had to conceed defeat with the car I had the engine in place driveshafts made and all ready to plumb and wire up. But had some troubles at home ending with selling the house (and garage), changed my job meaning i had no time and after trying to keep hold of the car for a further year with no progress I decided to cut my losses and broke it.

The remains ended up in the scrapyard in the sky so it sadly was never completed.
