St Engine In A Mk6 Cab

Ok, the engine is kinda in?!

I’ve come up with a rather major hiccup! after spending a good two or three days cutting and welding up the ST sub frame it bolted up nicely and the wishbones are in the correct position etc all looked to be going well next job bolt the engine to the sub frame and lift the whole lot into the bay. If only life were that simple! its almost a perfect fit side to side with about half inch one side and a little more the other but it seems to be sat miles to far forward? Now I’m faced with a small dilemma I could move the engine back in the sub frame but that means I have the driveshaft’s heading off at an angle the whole time which is bound to cause excessive wear and early failure! Alternatively I have to make a new inlet manifold and probably move the radiator forward an inch or so? Better for reliability but could cause some running issues esp. as I have no experience in this area! Really don’t want to take it to a garage and ask them to do the work as there is no achievement in that but I’m a little stumped at the mo!

Watch this space.

Here are some pictures to show my predicament!

Sorry for the slow progress on this I was ill over crimbo and new year esp. annoying as i took two weeks off so I could get this finished! Im in Singapore with work at the mo so no progress again for a couple of weeks but at least it gives me plenty of time to think through my options!

dunno what an ST gearbox is like? but do the shafts come out in a different location to say, an rs2000 box or zetec box? if they do, and they come out say further back. you could try to fit an rs2000 box or zetec box which would maybe bring the shafts closer to the engine or further forward allowing you to move the engine back acouple of inches?

just a fought, look into it. then no-doubt it will be afew inches to hack off the slam panel for extra room, but your have to make up a front detachable brace to support the extra stress.

or maybe now you got the engine you could try and bolt a cossy gearbox on, build a tunnel. make it RWD or 4x4? ST 4x4 cabby...hmmm the possibilities....lol. if the engine dosen't fit one way, make it fit another...lol

bro, it looks like an amazing project, just started one of my own but not sure to go with the full cossy kit or do something different, I dunno.

But wooo, its going to be a stunner when its finished bro.

Havent been on for a while but thought Id come back and let you know its still happening! Just at a much slower rate than I had hoped! Have been extremely busy at work so havent had much time to work on the car but things are starting to calm down a little again now and I have been spending plenty of money on parts during my idle period! Think I have figured out a sensible engine mount arrangement just got to get the grinder out and get them all made up! Slight issue at the moment as I broke my vice last week pushing some bushes into a land rover trailing arm. seemed to be going well and then pop stripped the tread and then cracked the casting! Kinda need that for cutting the plate for the engine mounts so will be heading out for a new one of those this week!

Will add some more pictures once its in!

Right latest update well latest pictures at least!

Ive been pulling out all the stops to try get this engine in for Ford Fair but I think Ive been beaten! Unfortunately work has gotten in the way meaning I havent had the tim I needed! also Im still witing on parts! Dam ebay!

Anyway The engine is now in well it has three engine mounts made just got to sort the one at the back I decided to ut the slam panel off to the lights bu that was after these pictures Ill stick one of that mod on later! it seems everything is going to line up now! Ive got the gear selector in position with the cables run through the the box its suprisingly difficult to cut a large hole in the floor! The main things left to do are, make us some driveshafts, coolant hoses, clutch hoses (hydraulic), conect/modify the exhaust and splice in the st wiring loom when it arrives! Then there are lots of fiddly little things and im sure it wont start and run the first time! Anyway here are the latest pics as you can see I may have to modify the sump as its rather low! as in only about 75mm from the ground but really just want to get it running first and see how it goes!

<a href="http://s73.photobucket.com/albums/i234/moggc1/?action=view&current=27072009111.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i234/moggc1/27072009111.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s73.photobucket.com/albums/i234/moggc1/?action=view&current=27072009113.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i234/moggc1/27072009113.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Ive now lifted the engine 35 mm hence removing the slam panel but when the suspension leveled out it is about the same height as in the pitures!!!

Anyway will keep you posted hopefully will be getting it going over the next few weeks / months!

i take it you are putting a front mount intercooler at the front behind the bumper to save room and oil cooler at the nearside front

what mounts are you using, or are you making custom ones?

the engine is a bit forward, but so are some of the cars out there fiat coupe 20v, and gti-6 in 205, but doesnt look bad atall

looks very good indeed

you have to keep the driveshafs straight, or it will wear them out or the bearings in the box

what welder are you using to mate everything back together? mig?

that sits bloody low chap. good you got it in, but abit worried about clearance issues. wouldn't be sure you could make up much more clearance on the sump? i recon thats going to be the most expensive part to cater for. apart from the engine its self.

can't wait to see it running tho.

Wow Mogg thats a superb transplant!!! are you not abble to raise the engine by an inch or so? as that sump is extrememly low!!..... alos are you going to get uprated poundage springs ?? as that may also raise the front end a littel giving you some more clearance .................All the best fella, look forwards to the up date

Hi all have been offshore for a week so no progress but to answer a few questions,

The engine mounts are all custom aprt from using the existing mounting points for the front gearbox mount and the rear mount but all made from 5mm Plate cut with an angle grinder and welded with my Arc welder the Mig isnt man enough for the thick plate.

As it stands the engine sits about 10mm below the chassis legs and I was hoping not to have to modify these much so as to keep the structural integrity of the car. but agreeed it realy does need to move up another inch or so! Will have to break out the angle grinder and do some trimming.

Im looking to get some coilovers for it but they are mighty expensive! The ST engine doesnt seem to be much heavier than the original the suspensing doesnt seem to sit any lower.

I have today got the wiring loom I was waiting for to try and splice in as much focus as I can! although having spoken with a few companies (Code Red, Torque of the Devil) it would seem Im going to have some issues with the engine management system. It is in essence too clever for its own good and as I dont have the ABS sensors will not allow the engine to boost. Im hoping to find away around this and the many other electrical gremlins as if I cant use the standard management I may have to abandon the project and return to a Zetec turbo. The problem being that to run 5 cylinders you need a pretty safisticated management system like an OMEX 710 which costs £900 just for the box plus the wiring and then the map It will be the best part of £2000 before I can get it running! Ive already thrown about as much money as I can afford and a little more at it! I could almost have bought a real cosworth already! I could have certainly fitted a Zetec turbo for less than Ive spent!

So Im at a crossing roads really I could sell all the bits I have and go down the easy route of a Zetec turbo or stick with it and potentially end up with a car that wont run! or will cost a small fortune to get running!

Im looking for any electrical wizzards who think they may be able to help...

Will post some new pictures When Ive jacked the engine up a bit and done some wiring!

could you not try to fit the abs sensors and the pick up wheel, there must be a few escorts with abs around the scrap yards

looking foward to the new pics

Yeah maybe not sure how diff they are and if that is going to be the only problem cant see there being many other issues now! Its virtually all focus underneath!

Got to call GGR tomorrow see if they can help me with getting it running!

Have you thought about Megasquirt and Spark with Edis system?????..........The reason i say this is due to the fact alot of people on the Volvo modding scene( I'm being serious lol ) use M S & S with great effect and being as the ST lump is a Volvo sysem, could you not if need be go down the route of using that, or maybe even a Volvo T5-R or V70-R loom and ecu????? just food for thought

agreed, megasquirt is very cheap about 200 delivered from the states with all sensors, my mate had this on his 1800 16v zetec turbo and ran very well, alot of ompanies are starting to use it as it works aswell as dta , omex etc but one you can map your self, or download maps from the net

my mate, The Worthing, builds megasquirt systems in devon with looms. so if you do need a system. might be able to get a deal on the lastest version.

very easy to work with and easy to set-up. also like said, price of it is peanuts for what it can do as a system
