  1. If you had suffer from a cracked roof pump tank cap (the clear plastic part), as Ford do not do a replacement, they would sell you the whole pump. So VW/Audi which has the same pump on some of the cabriolets, Golf and Audi 80. I got it from them. It is a little longer than the Ford one, but it fits and still has space once bolted up.

You can order it from an VW or Audi dealer, I went to Audi as it was nearest to me. Part number is repair kit VW 8G0-898-101 (Audi A8G0 898 101). Cost is £44.76 (£37.30 excluding VAT)

Comes with tank cap, torx screws, washers, and o-ring seal.

  2. The last three letters MUST match. They are the most important ones. If it doesn't then you would get some connectors wont fit, or certain circuits wont work.

    Hi guys,

I've been lurking on the forum for a year or so, and was hoping for a bit of technical help.

I've got a 96 Escort convertible, the electric windows all failed together and On looking at the fuse box could see dry joints and burnt tracks. I took it out and re soldered everything, put it back, and Now the Ford Imobiliser light doesn't flash at all and it won't start, so I'm assuming I've messed something up with the fuse box. I've bypassed the engine start inhibitor relay and it cranks, assuming the fuse box is knackered, and nothing on the imobiliser in any manuals, other than finding that this is usually a feed fault.

The fuse box is a 96AG14A073BA , so I thought Id ask what would be a suitable replacement?

I have been offered a 97AG14A073BB, I wasn't sure if this was suitable, I have been told the final letter is interchangeable but wasn't sure about the year prefix.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Neil

  3. Check the switch is not on disabling the rear electric windows. It is the black button with a red symbol (rectangle with lightening symbol).

As for the radio, not working, could be the supply of power to it. The aerial would only move up once the radio is on.

  4. Bit of a confusing one, but I think IIRC some other countries continued to have the XR3i on it, while in the UK then I think rest of EU it was changed to Si. They did the hatchbacks before the convertibles. Unless it was slow sotck sales of the convertibles as some mk5b convertibles are still badged as XR3i, but don't recall seeing any of the 3 door mk5b's as XR3i, unless it was a handful.

The Escort GTi was to be a replacement for the Escort RS2000, it had the same bodykit, although a standard 1.8 engine and half leather interior.

I believe these measures were done at the time to be "insurance friendly" due to thefts etc.

  5. No, the reason it did not have a boot release was because if you left the roof down with the car locked as some people would have done. Then people would have had access to your boot. So no mk5/6 Escort Cabriolet had them standard hardtop models had either a cabled boot release next to the drivers seat or and electric release button by the handbrake.

Also the cabriolets had a lockable glovebox for this reason where most of the mk5 Escorts did not have one.

I have fitted an electric release from a mk5/6 using the boot motor and wired a relay so that it works with my alarm.

  6. You may also find that to find the fault the power to the roof only operates with the key in position 1. Once ignition is in position 2 run, it would not work, unless you remove the yellow relay so it can run with the engine on.

Ford had did this putting an additional relay to stop people using it whilst driving the car.

  7. You would need to change the tyres, they are too big and would touch the inner arches on full lock. Also it would make your speedo well out. Check http://www.etyres.co.uk/tyre-size-calculator

For that wheel your best bet is to go for 195/45 R16

If you do go for 205/45 R16 it goes ok but you may get a little tramlining at times, even if you get the tracking done.

Hi guys have I made a massive mistake,
I bought a set of Mondeo zetec wheels to out on my escort mk6 cab. They are 6.5 x 16 with 205/55/16 are they gonna fit??

  8. I noticed that VW seems to do a replacement for this for the Golf. mine is cracked and wondering if I should buy this. It is Volkswagen part number repair set oil container 8G0898101

Seen on an American store http://www.ecstuning.com/ES444991/PriceAlert/

Also a post on it on a Golf forum at http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?95913-cabriolet-roof-pump-reservoir

If VW are selling them, I am surprise Ford is not selling them, or are they?

  9. You could fit the front strutbrace if it is still there, a few people removed them and sell them; so check you still have it. There is also meant to be a lower strutbrace, but again some people remove these and sell them to owners of standard Escorts. Try seeing your roof catch handles are not too tight, if it is it would cause the windscreen to flex as you say.
