Guest username
Wow that was some stubborn air! Reminds me of replacing a clutch master on a mate's Merc C180 a few years ago, had to leave that gravity bleeding for a whole day before getting anything like a decent pedal! Glad to hear it's on the mend now though, and unlike some you haven't just decided that old Escorts have bad brakes lol. I'm the same with the EFi system, I WILL make it work well with the CVH engine!
Springy2112
Thank you all for you support its been a real grueller...I was determined not to be beaten ..I had various mk3 s in the eighties and nineties and never had issues making the brakes work..OK they'll never be as good as my other 3 cars (modern stuff) but I knew they were not to right even by 1984 standards... Any way on to other bits now... Had 4 new tyres fitted and I am in the throws of trying to get audio sorted but that's on the audio thread..wish me luck.. Thanks again....Paul.. Paul Grainger
Hi, have you replaced the adjusters in the rear drums? These are prone to wear and slip as soon as you apply he hand brake. This will then give you loads of travel on the foot brake. Cheers
Springy2112
Hi Paul yes the adjusters are new and working properly...the brakes are done it was air hiding in the lines..Cheers buddy
Paul Grainger
Are the rear adjusters ok? They can slip when you put the hand brake on giving you loads of travel.

Himanshu
The seals in the master cylinder are the culprit I suspect. These give the age of the car and especially if you have bought a second hand one, The rubber perishes over time. Many times a refurbished master cylinders are very poorly built. Unfortunately do the age and Ford not manufacturing these, a refurbed on or second hand one is the only way, but just put new seals in. On average you will probably have to change the seals bi-annually. The same as manual power steering racks. My old rack covered 100k, lasted 25 years. I bought reconditioned racks only to have it fail ever two years. Somethings you have to throw money at. Unfortunately it is getting to the point you cant even throw money at these parts as Ford simply don't make them. I have purchased from Kelly Bray and Burton Power and unfortunately the new replacements don't fit or a tonne of work need to be done to modify it to ge it to fit, or they are so poorly refurbished that they last a minimal period. The labour costs out weigh the price of the components
