Hi guys, been workin on my mk4 cab every eve to try get her on the road, I have 2 things im stuck with, its 1.6 efi when I turn the ignition to position 2 the temp guage goes to the middle? I have tried a known working guage, but same problem also disconected the sender beside the manifold and still have same problem? Any ideas? The second prob, not so important is fuse/relay location for the heated front screen.

Thank you

James

Strange one, when you tried the new gauge did you swap the whole cluster or just fit a gauge to the existing one? If the latter, then it could still be an issue with a voltage stabiliser in the cluster. Another possibility is the fusebox could be corroded internally.

On our Mk5 the quickclear screen only works with the engine running, although the rear one works with just ign. on. If it doesn't work with the car running then it could also be fusebox related. I think the fuse numbering changed around '91 so afraid I can't provide a definite answer on which fuse it would be though, since ours is the later layout.

Thanks for your reply, I swapped the complete cluster just to be sure. Are you referring to the fuse box under the bonnet or is one hiding somewhere else?

Not sure about Mk4 but on our Mk5 the fuse box is under & to the right of the steering column, in front of where your right knee would be.

Temp gauge then, that has to be a wiring or fuse box problem I'd have said. Bad earths can cause all sorts of weird electrical gremlins, just remembered an early '90s Rover 214 I had where a loose battery lead caused the temp gauge to shoot up to the top...
