Hi all...i am a newbie to the forum...but had no luck finding a related topic..so here goes.

I have a 89 cabriolet...starts perfectly on first start or when cold....but after sitting in traffic or idling for a while...it shuts down and refuses to start bck up until it cools again.

Jump starting is the only way to get it started when this happens...however sometimes it shutdowns shortly after when comin off the accelerator.

The problem is very annoying...i have to travel with someone at all times.

Please help me !

Start with the obvious checks like battery condition and check the output of the alternator. After that you need to start looking at the starter motor and the wiring. Check all the terminals are clean and tight to the starter. Then check all your earth straps. Their will most likely be one to the gearbox housing and another from the inlet manifold bracket.

A common problem with the starters are that they become very hot from the exhaust downpipe and over the years it takes it toll on the grease etc inside the starter. If this is your problem whilst the engine is hot It will give flat battery like symptoms. The most common fix for this is to replace the starter with an early model transit connect diesel starter. They are a direct fit and are stronger. Hope this helps.

Check the as Starter as Andy says

But you say it shuts down? do you mean its stalls, then will not restart

if so, this could be a faulty Fuel Pump or relay

Do have An MFi Or EFi?

Mine used to do exactly the same even with a new starter, battery and earth strap/cable. I havnt started it for a while but since i have changed all main power cables and connectors and i will poss put a transit connect starter on for safe measure and some heat sheild

Sounds more like a fueling issue not a starter as you mention it cuts out if you leave it running when warm. I guess it is a mk3 Escort by your title but you don't mention the engine type. Also if the wire from the alternator to the battery has corroded, this can cause this and kill your battery;although you may have known it was this as the battery light would have been flickering.
