Guest Don Thomas
Hi, I'm new! My name is Thomas, I'm from Finland but am retired and have been living in Spain for a few years. I just bought an Escort Cabriolet with automatic transmission. My problem is that although everything else works and functions as it should, the top gear won't engage. I didn't even realize anything was wrong until I got out on the motorway. The noise driving more than 100 kilometers (60 miles) per hour is terrible at 3.500 RPM. I've asked the local Ford-dealer, but they actually don't seem to have a clue . . . about anything. Their only suggestion was a new gearbox for 3.000 euros. Has anybody had or heard of such a problem and does anybody have any suggestions? I'd hate to keep it just to drive to the grocery store. Vincygav
Is it a CVT gearbox, If so, I thought they were gearless. Ford had call them CTX, still same concept of a continuously variable transmission. The engine revs loud and seems as though it is slipping but it isn't. Guest Don Thomas
I don't think it's a CVT. First to third gear are distinct and function perfectly as well as "kickdown", but then it gets stuck. About 3500 rpm at 60 mph can't be right !? Levels checked, fluid ok.
