Guest Xr3iInUS
Since my birthday present was a junkyard engine and we got it on a stand yesterday, I thought I would start a thread for the project. This is going to be a bit challenging. Not only have I never owned a 1.6L - there are differences between US and UK. I'm not going to be able to see some until we can get the current engine out of the car. There is a rod through the block, so that's all I'm planning on using. I am hoping to retain as much of the UK parts as possible, as I fear dropping a complete US engine will not be any smoother than this. Plus I think you have more horsepower out of the gate First questions: Water pump is different - Can I get a new water pump from the UK? Ford or aftermarket? If Ford, I believe my dealer has a Ford dealer in Italy that buys parts from us. Were there cabs in Italy? As it would be nice to do a reciprocal thing with them. If aftermarket, can you suggest a good source that will ship overseas? I was talking to RS Turbos a few months ago about body parts but not sure they are a source for engine parts. I also need info about UK gasket sets. I know there is a difference in head gasket thickness between our 1.6 and 1.9s.... any info on the UK side would be great. I have 2 of the same Euro heads in my basement that I started a thread on a little while back. The number is 81SM-6090-BRA. I don't know yet what is in the cabbie now but at least I'll have 3 heads to work from. This is the new engine: http://www.74ghia.com/escort16icab/engine1.JPG This is all I have so far of the one in the car: http://www.74ghia.com/escort16icab/IMG_4191.jpeg http://www.74ghia.com/escort16icab/IMG_4192.jpeg Really excited about all this! I've been looking at convertibles since before I got my license and to own this is beyond cool. Edited April 5, 2015 by Xr3iInUS
RScab
If your engine is the correct Mk3 engine the water pump will look like this Have a check as I have a new 1 I could ship out to you
Guest Xr3iInUS
Finally got the insurance claim for the windshield in the US car, so I'm going to see how close it is to the cabrio while they're here. Hopefully this week! Yes, my water pump looks like yours. I also realized that the cab has an external radiator fill. Mine are on the radiator itself but there's no room in the cab to install that. Are they all like that? So if my radiator is no good I may have to go generic. Few questions: Have any of you used US parts to convert the wheels to studs and lug nuts? I'm wondering if that will work. I've seen that some of you have used conversion kits but if I have to replace hubs and drums anyway.... Does anyone have a list of all wheels available? I know mine came with 14s originally but the guy I got it from gave me aftermarket 15s separate with steel wheels on it. Lastly (for now lol) can you tell me what some of the non-obvious switches and block off plates are on the dash? I know most of them. What's the little cubby in the glove box supposed to hold?
