Guest Mk4 Kenilworth
I rebuilt the engine last Winter and had the head skimmed, but its weeped oil from the head gasket ever since, from the front left corner (exhaust side near the timing belt). Ive heard al CVH's weep a bit, so is it worth replacing the gasket for the sake of a few drops? There's no coolant leak/mayo stuff going on and this is the only issue. Also what would the best gasket be? I used a Cheap FAI one, is this the problem? Cheap gasket = crap seal!
Ian71
Seems a big strange to be leaking oil, are you loosing coolant, I hab problems with my rs turbo kept blowing head gaskets in the end put a multi-layer stainless steel one on,been alright (touch wood) ever since. Guest Mk4 Kenilworth
It's not leaking coolant at all, i was thinking of replacing with a multiplate comitec one but they're really expensive. What make of gasket did you buy?
Ian71
Cant remember m8 but was about £120.00. Thing is rs turbo runs low compression but if you keep skimming head gotta build it back up,thats why i put the multi-layered one on.
Ian71
When i said loosing coolant,i meant is the car smoking more (steam from exhaust) than normal, and header level droping.
Guest Mk4 Kenilworth
No steam at all mate and header level hasnt shifted. I've just spent the afternoon removing the head and couldn't find anything untoward except the break off torque for some of the head bolts were slightly low. I wonder if the cheap bolts were also a false economy. I'll buy quality gasket and bolts and see how i get on this time.
Ian71
Yea sounds like it could be that, unless the skim they did wasnt level ?
escortrs2000.co.uk
Get yourself a Payen branded gasket. It's the original ford part. There's a top guy on eBay "Gaskets for Classics" that does them at a very reasonable price. When I first built my engine it leaked from the same place. Had the head skimmed locally and I refitted it, it's been fine since. Lee
Guest Mk4 Kenilworth
It was a Payen gasket from Burton that i originally fitted. Ive just parted with £60 notes for a genuine Ford gasket and quality bolts so im hoping for better results. Thing is, deeply stamped in that corner are the numbers 21. The 2 creates a leak path from the bolt hole to the front face. What a stupid bloody place to do that. I'm a designer engineer and know you never stamp a sealing surface. Its too late to skim the block and i reckon it'll always be a weak spot for any gasket. Doe all CVH's have numbers stamped there? Would head gasket sealent fill in the stamping?
