I'm driving along and the car cuts out, it won't accelerate, I have to pull over wait 5 minutes then try to start it, then after 5 minutes it does it again.

Any suggestions what it could be?

Any help is much appreciated.

I had a few problems like that 1 was fuel not getting from the tank other was damp getting on the air filter just guess am no mechanic and also the timing needed adjusting coz it seemed to move an need resetting on the points

I'm no mechanic either but I think it could be the fuel pump didn't know if anyone has had this problem before, a few people I have asked have said it could be the fuel pump!!

Hi, I bought a MK4 cab yesterday, drove it home last night and this morning the car wouldn't start. An extremely helpful AA man said it was the fuel pump and rotor arm. He gave the fuel pump a slap and it started the car but the same thing happened to me as you, when at idle the car cut out, there just wasn't enough petrol going to the engine. Good job I knocked the bloke down £500!

Suggest it might be the same thing

If its a EFI it will be a small yellow one under the dash, took me ages to find mine lol

If you go on your back near the peddles and look up behind the dash with a torch you will see em, there should be 4/5 (Diff colours/sizes) of em on a rail, the rail comes off if you use a stubby philips screw driver bit fiddly tho, or you find that most of the time they are just zip tied up there or dangerously! like mine - hanging down freely lol

This sounds similar to an issue im having with my mk4 escort cab 1.6i CVH.

Mine cut out at speed (60mph) with almost a full tank. Got towed home, changed fuel filter (which was filthy) then a helpful neighbour suggested it could be the cam belt slip/fail. This stopped me in my tracks as i didnt want to be turning it over if the timings out. Now on mission to check cambelt and hopefully eliminate that before getting back to potential fuel delivery issue.

Reason for not immediately dismissing the cam belt/timing issue is that the oil cap had blown off the head with such force it had snapped the little rubber lead/strap thing, this to me suggests a build up of pressure, potentially caused by mis timing, hence the ideas validation.

Did you get to the bottom of your cutting out issue Stally08?

is it efi or mfi ? my efi had a dodgy rubber joint on the internal fuel pump could be that? and if it was the timing it would be running very rough sounding etc

Thats good news.

It's an MFI engine. Looking more and more like fuel issue, once I have checked timing belt ill have a look at that

Cheers for the input
