welshlad
Hi all i have a mk4 efi as some of you know, ive managed to get the pump working by jumping yellow relay in yellow holder but no the petrol is only just getting to the end of the pipe (that goes into injector rail) obviously the pressure is low but i dnt know why? any ideas??? could it be the pump knackered or the pressure regulator adjusted when someone bodged a external pump on it ??? dnt really want to drop the tank if i can help it
Guest s6boy1979
Check the little rubber pipe between the pump on the sender. I had the same issue with low fuel presure and it turned out the pipe had split which meant i still got fuel just not enough pressure. Its a tank drop and a sender/pump out job i am afraid though. welshlad
think i might do that anyway methinks , just got it to want to start but not actually start - ive screwed regulator screw all the way in and it wants to start but only if ICV idle control valve is diconnected wish i had of kept the bodge job pump on it now grrrr
welshlad
Got to the bottom of why the efi pump wasnt working ie not eneough pressure it was a small rubber washer that was nackered and not sealing it, prob seen to many speed pumps etc http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z349/welshlad1978/DSCN2824_zps6f270aee.jpg
welshlad
changed rubber seal on fuel pump, bolted tank back on and it fired after 4 turns luckily ive still got a spare pump for if it ever is the pump that fails
Guest 2steppa
How difficult was it to take the tank out - Ive a feeling my SECOND pump is about to fail so I might be tempted to tackle it myself instead of spending 300 quid on garage labour... ? Guest Older and wiser
Hi all i have a mk4 efi as some of you know, ive managed to get the pump working by jumping yellow relay in yellow holder but no the petrol is only just getting to the end of the pipe (that goes into injector rail) obviously the pressure is low but i dnt know why? any ideas??? could it be the pump knackered or the pressure regulator adjusted when someone bodged a external pump on it ??? dnt really want to drop the tank if i can help it Hello M8 Sorry to hear the problem, I had a problem with non starting and it turned out to be a safety anti roll switch in boot, which prevented fuel being pumped to fuel rail, might be worth checking out, Lh side if I remember rightly, just press it in. PS how come your car is A J reg ? thought 1990 ended on a H reg? Cheers and good luck
welshlad
Hi guys Good point older and wiser, check the inertia switch first and your probably right it sounds like the fuel regulator but could also be the same problem i had with the rubber joint on the fuel pump itself, take the regulator off and turn over the car to see if it comes out faster than it does to the rail to find out this, or perhaps the pump has had it. Just a thought how old is the fuel filter could be that, prob not tho As for taking the tank out 2steppa its easy to unbolt the tank and drop it, its the tappping the ring that holds the pump/sender unit in place thats tricky especially sparks wise! as obviously its the petrol vapour thats flammable not the actual liquid petrol! i wrapped the end of my screw driver with insulation tap to prevent this http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z349/welshlad1978/DSCN2824_zps6f270aee.jpg
Guest 2steppa
Hmm, might have a go if it's practical with axle stands or ramps to do it from below. Pump used to make a nice 'hmmmmm' when I turned the key lately a few times it's gone 'urrrrrrr' sounding like its about half the normal speed, worried it might cop out altogether! welshlad
mine has actually changed sound too but it still working fine, luckily i have a spare one just in case and a fuel pump to bodge under the bonnet temporarily etc
Guest suffolk04
Did you leave the filler neck attached to the 1/4 panel? Heard somewhere needs to be loosened off behind the fuel cap
gingergman
You have to undo the filler neck (this is where you pray its not rotten when you do it)! Thought mine was solid, then oh dear!
welshlad
Woops forgot about that lol, mine was solid luckily
Guest suffolk04
Sorry to bring up a old thread, but can you remember where you got new seals from? Been to ford, they say it's part of the sender unit which is £300+ amd if it's available
welshlad
I have a full cabs worth of bits so i took the seal of my spare unit, have you tried Dwayne Maiden? he might have a knackered pump/sender with a good rubber seal on it shame they dont sell them on their own i would of bought one as a spare

Stephen Bearded Minky Hill
I had that problem ages ago. I got a piece of fuel pipe about the same length as that flexi joint and secured it with a couple of jubilee clips. Has been perfect ever since
