Guest Alanman
Bigcab has alway had manual windows, but we've been given some door cards with big speaker pods so we now need to upgrade to electric windows. No problem, a quick rumage through a box of bits finds both electric window mechanisms, wires and switches. Last night I stripped the pasenger door and removed the manual mechanism to fit the electric mechanism, but could I fudge work out were this electric unit fit to the door. lol. Theres a lot of holes on the door but none seemed to match these new electric units. Here's the question(s): Bigcab's doors are mk3 but these new mechanisms are defo mk4. Is that a problem in itself? Also, and I think this is more relavent. I seem to remember that the RS Turbo (Hatch) electric mechanism wont fit the Cabby. Is this right? I cant remember what these are from but they could easily be hatch units. H E L P ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

gingergman
Think the only difference with the mk3 door is how the door cards mount up? Tin top mechanisms are different. I've no door card on mine atm so I can take a few pics if it helps?

Guest Alanman
A pic would help. The mechanism you sent is same as the ones I had. I now think its the door being mk3 that is the problem. This is my door. You can see where the catch has been moved and the 'butchered' holes where the handle is attached. The mechanism does not match the door on any way. And there is no holes for the little runners to go either. This is a picture of another type of mechanism off ebay and this one looks more like the manual one I removed with two destinct mounting plates rather than one big one. I'm lost now. :(
gingergman
That inner part of the door looks quite a bit different to a mk4, I've got some pictures but gotta wait till im on proper tinternet again to post them. There's a few good diagrams in the mk4 Haynes, you got one for a mk3?
Guest Alanman
No Haynes. :-( That is the only explanation. It MUST be different. I dont fancy buying another set to find that they're different too. We might just be going back to winders. lol.
Guest Alanman
Had a quick look but not confident. They are all saying mk3/mk4 as if they are interchangable. Basically I need to find a pair of mechanism for an early mk3 and cabriolet. Winders it is then. lol.
Guest El87cabi
I hate to say this and be wrong, but that looks more like the mk4 hardtop 3 door 'leccy mechanism, the cabriolet 1 works on a scissor mechanism with an aluminum guide bar on the inner door skin Edited February 26, 2013 by El87cabi
RScab
Hi Al they fit in @ a angle u can see on this pic - 3 fixing holes show with red circles
Guest Alanman
Wicked, that helps a lot. BUT..... my door only has 2 of those 3 holes. as long as i can line up the 2 the same I'll simply drill the 3rd. Next question and anothe pic please lol. Where does the guide runner sit? Thanks for all this help. It greatly appreciated. Alanman
RScab
Four Fixing on the Elecy Motor & 2 on the Guide hope this pic helps its a new door so no old fixing marks to work from but sure this is right If you fix the motor using the holes u have then just drill the missing ones you'll need to slot 1 of the the guide holes let me know if ya need anythin else - slot hole size etc.
Guest Smiler
The main differences between mk3 & 4 doors is the inner opening lath cut-out and the lock barrel hole in the outer skin. The rest are possible drillings for fixtures and the interior handle. If you went to the local dealership in the mid '90's and asked for a brand new door for a mk3 you would be supplied with basically mk4 door but with both sets of drillings but be lumbered with an oversize lock barrel hole. Guess how I know this!
Guest Alanman
That pic help a shit load. We might actually be able to have the electric in the car. woop woop. I cant beleive I've had Escorts in one form or another for over 20 years and NEVER come accross this. Always learning. lol..
RScab
Should all be fitted & workin now so where's the pics of the finished job LOL
Guest Alanman
We've been busy buying a new car for Clare so the Cab got forgot about. lol But I'm back on it and the mechanisms are in. I only needed to drill 2 holes each side for the extra runner so not to bad. The main mechanism has 3 of the 4 bolts and is tight enough for me. lol. All tested and working over the weekend but I've just been to the local motor factors for some more wire and bullet connectors etc. I have MOST of the loom but just a bit needs Alanmaning. lol. Should be all sorted later tonight. :-)
