Car Tax

Hi Everyone, I will picking up my new cab next weekend. (1996 1.8I 16v Ghia). Getting everything sorted insurance tax etc this weekend. MOT Passed with a bit of welding, insurance fine. However nearly had a heart attack at the price of the tax. £220 a year £121 a year.

My question, is the car tax price set in stone due to the age of the car or has anyone managed to reduce there emissions significantly enough to be able to contest the price and get ther tax reduced by means of maybe changing the engine or putting a cat on.

Just a thought.

Its not based on emissions for that age of car. its simply under 2.0 litre petrol or 2.0 litre and over petrol .

Shouldn't be £220 a year unless they changed it due to new budget as mine came for GTi a month ago and that was £165.00 a year

as you may know, cars over 25 years old used to get exemption. this was stopped in the late 90s so now only cars older than 1973 get exemption.

i signed this petition today, to get the 25 'rolling' years reinstated. worth a shot i suppose.

apologies if this has been posted before.
