Well just checked my insurance and I remember when they asked for the registration number the details came back as

Ford Escort cabr xr3i

So even if its not and just a 1600i the insurance mus be the same thats the 1988 one

Also on my other cab which is a 1989 one the insurance is still classing the car as a xr3i

Strange if they are only Escort 1600i's Why insurer's class the as the Xr3i model

Only difference is trim level. So your as original may not have had coloured bump strips, spotlamps, other features such as the drak grey and red trim used on seats. Engine wise its identical. Presume this model was aimed at older poeple

Mine had red strip in bumper as original, both have red body side stripe

also the trim is same in both dark grey will red pattern

No spotlamps though (one has but thats kitted as well not original)

One has heated front screen the other doesnt

Both centrol locking electric windows and mirrors and electric hoods

Dont think its an Xr3i as it would have it on the V5 i suppose

Doesnt bother me just that someone asked me

As Lee said it's all about trim level, from factory 1.6i or 1600i is manual everything, no bodykit, no handbrake surround etc. Basically an entry level cabriolet

My old 'D' plate cabi started life as a 1.6i, previous owner added the turbo kit and seats after he'd cooked his rs turbo.

Just sold my first cab, So changed insurance over to second cab, Told them its a 1.6i, They said its coming up as a Xr3i

Told them nope its deffo a 1.6i on V5

They said well its coming up on dvla records as a Xr3i cab.

So looks like thats what they are

So its insured as a Xr3i cab,

The 1600i re appeared in 1988 to over come the horrundous insurance premimums the 3i was commanding, engine and performance they matched and trim wise they where identical thanks to fords optional extra (things like electric windows etc where not standard fit on 3i's from new).. It was souly down to the dealer what the car was registered as as 1600i came in at group 18 and 3i's group 20
