Hi all

Just aquired a 1987 1.6 ghia cvh cabriolet it has been stood for 10 years in a garage .!

now all the engine hoses sound really crispy when you squeeze them then go soft after a few squeezes like it is either full of rust or limescale .. now will a flush solve this problem or shall i replace all the hoses .?

thanks all in advance

Hi and welcome,

Are you sure the rubber is not going brittle?

If it's deposits inside the hoses and the hoses look to be in good nick, you could try a pipe cleaner to clean them out.

Replacing them may not always be possible, especially if Ford do not stock the parts anymore.

sounds like rust build up inside the hoses, the best way to get shot of the rust and especially cleaning the heater matrix out is run the car up to temp then as it has cooled down a bit slowly release the presure off then drain the coolant out and fill with clean water and some caustic soda. then run the car again with the cap off after about 15 mins switch it off then drop all the water out again and then with a hose flush all the water out with the engine running and hose constantly running so engine doesnt run out of water. then replace with fresh anti-freeze and water, also a pointer here is to do all this with no termostat in as any rubbish in the system will be trapped by the stat.

If its been stood that long it may be worth giving the engine a partial strip to check and lube everything up be its fired up. It will probably seize otherwise.

when i read the title i thought i bet the car has been stood a while! if the extearnal of the hoses is in good nick id try and clean them out. if it was me id remove them 1st and squeese em about and run water through them

but its no good just doing the hoses the whole system will need doing as the hoses will be crusted aswell as the rest of the system so its false economy just doing the hoses, if its gona be done its best doing the whole system, the caustic soda works believe me it is better than any flush you pay over the odds for. it also frees up crustation around the water pump and it actually gets to work as the engine is running it also clears any blockages in the system.

I had the same issue with crusty hoses.

I've just used the caustic soda method and it worked a treat.

Cheers
