Broken Speedo Cable

Hi,

I live in New Zealand and own a 1988 All White Cab. The speedo does not work. It has a 2 piece speedo cable fitted.Traced the problem to a broken lower cable. The broken is where the cable is attached to the gear box. I've unscrewed the out casing and discovered the break is flush leaving what I presume is some sort of sqaure shaped locator inthe gear box. Any ideas how to remove this fromt the gear box?

Also, BurtonPower.com advise that there are no replacement lower cables available and no one supplies an after market single cable.I find this a bit strange. Any ideas on a replacement?

Regards Stephen

hello mate, can you not use a pair of pliers with a tiny point end on to get the snapped bit out? if not, the bit the cable goes into screws out the gearbox (not sure if you mean this as you said above?)

replacement cables over here are easy to get, i had no problem

As gingerman said try some pliers. A small magnet may help also. I had the same problem on my first car years ago. In the end i took the gearbox out to sort it

If you pull the little roll pin out of the side, just below where the cable goes in, you can pull out the drive and holder. The square drive bit is the actuall speedo drive gear.

Easy to do but you will need a very good pair of side snips to get the roll pin out.

When refitting it dont tap it all the way back in or it wont be easy to get out again.

Good luck

Hi, Thanks for your reply. The bit I unsrewed from the gear box was the 21-22mm threaded hexogon female nut that has the outer casing going throught the centre of it. Once this female nut was loose I was able to withdraw the outer casing from the gear box.

The threaded male piece is attached to a black circular (maybe rubber) piece that has a wire (presume the reverse light) connection adjacent to it. Is this the bit that can be screwed out of the gear box once the little side roll pin at is with drawn?

There is not much space around the speedo cable entry point. Access from underneath the car seems to be blocked by what looks like the ABS unit. Access from above is very tight. I presume it is just a case of disconnection and removing engine accessories to gain a bit of space and access from above.

Cheers from New Zealand.

The black bit you have described is the speed sensor, this sends road speed information to the ECU and just unscrews fron the gear box. (sorry didn't realise you had one of those!) The bit I was decribing is the bit under that which houses the speedo drive.

I know there isnt much room but it can be done from up top without removing the ABS modulators.

Good luck

Hi,

Thanks for your advice back in early December. The new lower speedo cable final arriveb from FORDPARTSUK.COM (Edwards Ford) just before Christmas. Next weekend we have multi-car club Classic Car Weekend with car runs to various reserves/parks around Auckland so I decided to fit the speedo cable and get the certificate of fitness for the car issued so we car drive in one of the runs. I'd appreciate some more advice as I don't want to break any thing - repacement parts for the car are not readily available in New Zealand as the only models in the country have been privately imported as used vehicles.

Yesterday I was able to remove the black speed sensor from the gear box without much trouble - see pic. The new lower speedo cable does not have a speed sensor attached to it. Have I been sent the wrong lower speedo cable or do I have to remove the broken square drive which is located in the top end of the speed sensor and has broken off flush with the top of the speed sensor?

There is a square drive pertruding from the lower end of the speed sensor - when this is spun, the broken square drive that has broken off flush spins so the 2 ends are either 1 piece or 2 pieces connected. Using pliers I tried pushing the square pertruding drive upwards and expected to see the broken off flush bit pushed out - this didn't happen. Does the male square drive end of the new lower speedo cable (see attached pic) therefore slide into the top of the speed sensor unit once the broken piece has been removed?
