Guest Lee81 Posted November 2, 2010 Share Posted November 2, 2010 check the oil level in the gearbox. May be too full. Can't remember but i think the speed cable has a seal built into it also. Finally i think different variants of the ib5 gearbox have the breather located in diffrent places. Late as fitted in mk6 have a plastic cap on top. Early mk3 have a pipe on the end on the box. Guest suffolk04 Posted November 3, 2010 Share Posted November 3, 2010 i've had the car for nearly 4 years now, its just started leaking, so think it's been built right. the breather on mine goes to the inner wing, but like i said, pipe is there, just no breather block. i'll look at the level, then change the speedo cable, fingers cross it's the cable, other wise its more £££ that i aint got Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Paul Grainger Posted November 9, 2010 Share Posted November 9, 2010 If the breather is clear and the oil level is ok then remove the tiny roll pin that sticks out of the casing just below thw speedo cable. (you will need a decent pair of side snips as it is tight). You can then pull the threaded part out of the transmission complete with the drive. There is an O ring on the piece you pull out that can be replaced. When it comes to refitting, line up the groove on the piece you pulled out so the roll pin can go back in ok, and dont tap it all the way back in just in case you need to remove it again. Guest Mk4 Kenilworth Posted February 9, 2013 Share Posted February 9, 2013 Can anyone suggest a fix for this or know where I can get a speedo gear assembly? I've completely rebuilt the engine and transmission. It runs and sounds great, but the only fly in the ointment is this leak. I know it's not the breather nor the o' ring which is new. So it can only be coming up from inside the speedo gear, right? Or am I wrong? Does the cable's threaded section act as a seal? if so will a dab of thread sealant cure this?
