Gearbox Swap Out

Here is a question that no one else seems to have asked before.

I have a non LSD MK3 XR3i and i now have a spare non LSD MK4 rs gearbox. I cannot use the gearbox due to the mount differences, so can i just open my MK3 gearbox up and swap everything over from the Mk4 box. They both came off of 1.6 cars.

 

HA HA try and figure that one out ladies and gentlemen.

i do beleave you can swap the bits from case to case but why i would have to ask?

I have a problem with engaging the gears, so its probably a synco issue. So a swap out of a box i has seems the best way rather then buying a new box.

Hi have you tried swapping the mounting bolt's from mk4 box to mk3?if not try that i'm sure i've done this in the past.......worth a try and could save you ££££££££

i believe the bell-housing is diffrent on the mk3 box to mk4??

yeah the gearbox mounts differently on the mk4. So a gearbox from a MK3 can be put onto a MK4 but not the other way.

Ok i have been trying to figure this out. But i cannot. The gearbox is in place. I can use a screwdriver to get the gearbox into every gear, But when i try to attach the gear rod i cannot get it out of that gear. It would seem that the gearbox needs less travel in order to change gear. So do I need the gear lever set from a MK4 rather then a MK3?

the only difference between this gearbox and the old one, is that this one has a selector plate inside the box as where the old gearbox did not have one.
