Engine "Juddering" 1.8 Ghia Mk6.

Hi,

when i push down the accelerator hard in neutral the engine judders for a second then revs fine.

But when i push it down slowly its fine. Could this be the fuel filter that needs changing or something more serious?

Any help would be appreciated with this,

Thanks.

It could just be a plug lead thats breaking down m8, could be worth spraying some wd40 or similar on them all to eliminate that possibility,

Hi,

I tried spraying with WD40 but no luck. Now when the engine is running the whole car "judders" also, when you put your foot down in any gear the acceleration is very very poor and it keeps cutting back a bit.

Could this be the fuel injectors? or is there an easy fix to this?

I have replaced the air filter as the old one was very dirty but still no luck.

Thats a massive help!!!

I dis-connected the battery and left it for an hour then re-connected it and the acceleration is now more smooth.

A bit more power too which is nice.

Im a novice at this so please excuse the simple question im about to ask.

Can i get new leads from halfords? Any reccomendation on the best ones? and do i just fit the new plugs or do i have to do something to them first?

Any mre help you can offer would be great.

Yes you can get the leads from halfords. I personally use bosch HT leads & the only thing you have to do with the spark plugs is to check/adjust the electrode gap.

Whereabouts are you?

Im in Cullompton near Exeter in Devon.

Its the gap i was worried about. Isnt there a metal slider you use to get the correct gap? are these easily avalible?

Again thanks for your help here. Its much appreciated. I just want to learn to do this myself instead of paying the garage all the time.

These suffer from coil packs going down and it sounds like thats whats happening to yours mate. Before you go chucking money around i would go to your local garage and get them to plug there computer in just to see where the fault is. It might cost you £20-£30 pound to get it checked but it will be worth it in the long run as you can start changing things and then find out it was a duff plug after spending £100 to find it.

Hope this helps :salut_gb:

Thats a good idea, My garage up the road has a laptop they plugged into my mondeo to find out what was wrong. I'll ask them to take a look.

Im fine with bodywork and interior, im just not good with engines so you guys are being really helpfull here.

I'll let you know when its been checked.

Thanks again for all your help. I appreciate your time.

in my opinion i wouldnt take it to a garage as thats just more expence, try spark plugs and leads first, if it sorts the problem then happy days, if it dont then its not a waste of cash as simple things like that are service items so it will always make it run smoother in the long run, you will need to change them at some point anyway so why not now while its being problematic? just my advise :salut_gb:

Well i dis-connected the battery last night and left it for an hour. Its now 30% better. More smooth on acceleration and not so sluggish so thats good.

Its the plugs, leads etc i was going to change next. As i said before, im happy to change them myself, im just not sure about getting the gap right between the electrodes on the spark plugs. Any advice would be great here.

Thanks.

ive never had to bugger around with spark plugs, i jut say what car there for and thats it, allways been fine.

i cant think of anything that dis connecting the battery would do, its just one of those intermitent probs sometimes its better than others, i think its coil relaited.

Thanks for the pic, just had a look and found it straight away.

Also thanks very much for your help here. I'd be lost without it.

Maybe you could tell me if the coil is causing this too.

When the engine is idling and i press down the accelerator, the revs drop and it kind of coughs before the revs go up.

Is that a coil problem?

Sorry to keep asking but you guys are the experts here. Im just a novice learning from you.

Will do chaps.

Think ive sorted the roof problem aswell.

Its not the white cog inside the motor thats cracked. There is a small metal pin that is held by the cog and inserts into the hydralic pump to spin it. The cog isnt holding the pin strongly enough and it keeps slipping out. So have used a very strong adhesive to try and secure the pin and hopefuly the roof will work again.

I'll kepp you updated on this when ive put it all back together again.

Sorry if i sounded like a tech,,,,,lol I would deffo change the coil first tho and if you have a local parts shop they can do you a new one for around £25 and i would also change the leads and plugs at the same time. Its all general service work and stuff you need to keep up on to keep the car running sweet. Its good to see that your keen to learn this stuff and there is lots of good ppl on here to keep you right. :drivin:
