Part Number For Correct Hydraulic Fluid For Power Roof/Hood.

Hi.

Replaced the motor and rams on my mk4 electric hood today.

I had a problem finding out the correct fluid to top the motor up. My local dealer did not know and it didn't say in either my owners manual or Haynes manual.

I eventually found out from a main dealer so thought I'd post it on here in case anybody is in the same boat.

Correct stuff is Ford part number 13841104 apparently this is the same for all year cabriolets. I paid £9 + VAT for a litre.

Hi All.

Had my MK4 since 2000. Started to get problems a couple of years ago and started to play with pumps. I now have three, but only one cap! Anyone know where I can get the cap which holds the fluid? I then had problems with getting the fluid. Ford wanted a fortune, but my colleague gave me some hydraulic fluid which seemed to work, but I started to get problems in opening and closing the roof. I decided to check all pipes, rams and pump. After cleaning all the orifices and blowing out the pipes and pump,I decided refill with brake fluid (Haynes manual lists Duckham's Universal Brake Fluid). Yes, it worked, but only moved 6 " before blowing the fuse (30 amp). What is the correct fuse rating for the pump! Looking at the Haynes diagrams, I had connected the pipes accordingly, but when I perused a print out of the layout from Ford - using a magnifying glass to trace the spidery drawing- it seems that the upper pipe feeds from the ram are connected to the RHS (viewed from the boot) of the pump plastic cap and the lower pipes to the LHS. It worked! It even opened and closed on the correct button! However, the pump seems to run on after the roof is closed/open and the fuse blows unless you are quick enough to hit the switch!

I think that now I have the pump connected properly to operate the roof, I think I will replace this pump with the one that seems to run quieter, once I change the cap over!

This is a 1990 model, and I always get a comment from the MOT tester as to its excellent condition, and I am looking at a full respray on it once I can save enough money from my pension, a new roof and see about tidying the interior trim, no rips or tears in the seats, just scratches on the plastic. Possibly one of the best cars that I have owned, has always started on the button and can still pull a ton. On the autobahns, not here, no,no,no! My wife is the main driver and as we are starting to get Arthur-Right-Us and other age -related problems, I'd like to know if there is a way of fitting power steering to it, what type and where from? Phewww! Bit of a liturgy, but Happy New Year!!

Can I re-iterate that brake fluid (which is highly corrosive) should NOT be used in hydraulic systems other than the braking system.

If it leaks it will strip your paintwork and make future work on the pump/hydraulic system more dangerous.

Power steering fluid equivalents should only be used, such as the type I mentioned above.

Having problems with my roof now press the button and nothing, have a spare pump with a broken fluid holder wondering weather to switch and change the holders, or it could be something easy to fix on the one thats already on.
