Engine Turns But Wont Start Help Plz !!

Right after having an auto electriction out and being told one of my blk wires to the battery was in fact a live lol not good !!,so now i have red lights it turns over and is getting fuel but still doesn't start !! urghhhhh !!!!.

This was after changing 1 x fuel line to the airbox urghhhh (snapped fixing after trying to tighten an air leak !!).

 

I'm so close but yet so far !! , and things are getting serious as i have only got 2 days before i re - take my test !! (ban) .

Every so often the air pipe coming from the air box 2 the engine makes a popping noise and the rubber pipes on the inlet manifold blow off lol !! , it makes you jump if your in the bay as it sounds like a backfire lol !!.

Any ideas lads as things are getting silly now ?.

Come on lads it must be something stupid ?. :wacko:

firstly its not just lads that know about cars

 

secondly im assuming you are talking about a mfi cab?

 

have you checked to see wether your getting a spark or not?

 

if it is mfi, check the butterfly on the metering unit to make sure thats not stuck or sticking.

check to see if its sparking first, as recomeded above : the black earth wire becoming live, it means your car aint earthing

 

first check all the earth wires in the bay, and check for broken conections, or bad connection e.g rust at the end of the bolt as this would stop any grounding

or of you have a couple of setc of jumpleeds lying around, connect the earth from the battery to the chassis and then the second set from the engine, or gearbox to the chassis if its still not running

Cheers for the replies AND i know its not just men on here lol !! , ( i was just asking the men is all lol !!).

 

Issues have become confused !! , the black wire WAS A LIVE WIRE !! , a bad worker has been in the bay previously lol (not this one lol).

 

Car HAS power now , turns and has a spark but wont start !!.

 

As i have said it pops and the 2 hoses blow off the top of the inlet !!,allmost like the air aint getting through !!,i have checked the thing that goes up and down in the air box and it does move and isn't stuck !!,still not starting urghhhhh !!!.

 

PLZ PLZ PLZ HELP !!!.

does the pump come on?

 

Yes can you hear it priming and will it run if you tip some fuel or easy start (not good i know) into the inlet manifold ?

yeah it is humming mate (fuel pump is anyway).

Still no joy today , after changing the cold start valve for a known working one and a clean of the butterfly thing in the airbox it still don't want to know or start urghhhhh !!!.

I spoke to the auto electriction/mechanic today and he's said it could be one of the leads from the dist' - spark plugs is in the wrong order ?,he said he had a pug' doing the same thing last week !!.

As per usual the bloody haynes is sketchy about what goes where and the pics are crap so any help boys AND girls ?, pics would be really appreciated .

dont know why im bothering to reply seen as its only the males advice ure after. (ignorance is bliss eh?)

 

check the rotar arm on your dizzy... and check the spaceing between the contacts.

 

have u checked to make sure that the fuel lines are getting fuel?

have you tried what murcus suggested?

 

take the air ducting off the inlet plenum and spray carb cleaner into it, if it starts and runs ok then you know its a fuelling issue.

tacha_maree is correct , if the rotor arm, has any corrosion what so ever, it will break the contact, and stop/weaken the spark which in turn, will stop it firing

wahay :smile: !! , Engines now started but fails to keep running after an inintial 3 - 5 minutes say , now after several minutes it heats up becomes spluttery and stalls but re - starts strait away any ideas ?,the engine is running quite hot though ( and heats up VERY quickly).

The problem was the dizzy was 180 deg' out lol lol .

 

Ignorance is bliss ? , i wouldn't know being a man lol !! , cheers for the advice though much appreciated u worked on cars long then ? , u a qualified mechanic ?.

 

Trying to fathom the gear selection correction process was a nightmare :throw: 2 as there is 3 ways to adjust the linkage depending on early or late 5 speed or early 4 speed,as mine had an unknown mk 4 box in it (turned out to be after 1987 anyway lol !!) , didn't know the box had been changed before doing this so thats one bonus i suppose.

 

The switch that turns on the fan doesn't work so i fitted the wires together temporary to run it 24/7 untill i find my old one to use instead and hopefully it'll work !! , i could do with some pointers as to how to wire in an 'inline' switch so i can switch it on when i want for fast driving lol !!,but if left 'off' it will still use the sensor to switch the fan on.

Has anyone reading this done one before ?,i would like to use a standard ford switch as i have several blanks in my dash i can use for instead !!.

 

Ideally i want to keep the weight down so i'm not going to use a leccy roof or have/add rear bench seat belts,its going to be kept as standard looking as possible but have several 'tastefull' mods i.e. : cream badges front and back (DONE) , s1 graphic kit (se instead of rs on each wing) DONE ,lowered 60mm all-round DONE ,painted red calipers / drums DONE ,cossie steering wheel 3 spoke like early xr3 wheel DONE , (untill my 3 spoke rs one is re - covered),painted blue/red lump and other bay parts DONE ,going to raise bonnet to help keep temps down (d.i.y though ) , car HAS a 4-2-1 sportex manifold and full 3.5" system with a 3" chrome tailpipe this is also sportex (DONE)and i got them both for £70 inc postage and they are like new lol laughing !!,Richley polished gearknob DONE .

I have re - sprayed the rs 15's and added new blk badges with blue rs signs as i couldnt source 'se' BAH , added clear front indicators and tinted black sides.

Gonna get the dash changed for a plastic one asap as mine is like the salt plains in america !! , may get it flocked before installation and bear with the salts for a few more weeks untill it returned to be fitted , thinking electric blue and blk dash /console , with black leather re - trim with blue pipings to seats and door cards (if i dont go chequer plate ali' for weight saving on cards) .

 

So far i have also changed the fuel pump,front and rear bushes,rear shoes,steering wheel,lower arms,steering track rod ends,engine,heater matrix,indicators,cold start valve,plugs,oil filter,sourced a boot lock and 101 other parts.

So all in all i'm pretty pissed now as even the bloody bleeding of the brakes was a nightmare as 1 of the bleed bolts rounded and i had to hammer a 10mm socket over the 11mm rounded nut and hey presto it just turned thank f**k !! (any spare 1's people ? , pm me if u have !!).

 

I'm hoping to get the bitch up and smooth running by mid - week so i can mot her for the road lol just as the summer ends bah !!,so any pointers would be really appreciated boys & girls.

im close to scrapping a xr3i mfi so if u want anything ill can send u it in the post

Cheers Tacha for the offer of parts !!,could do with a caliper bleed nipple as mine rounded but i managed to get it open to bleed the brakes but i need to change it before i can't open it !!.

Level 2 motorsport how did you get into that ?.
