Guest spaceman
Got one to change for MOT, never done it before. Looked at Haynes manual which was interesting. Is this a hard job? Not worried about stripping hub off as done that before but not sure about getting old bearings out and new in. Thanks
Guest edy
are you sure you have to change it, because if it is just movemnet you can just tighten the hub nut up to take the play out (dont get me wrong they will need changing) but should get you through the MOT
Admin Paul Posted May 21, 2008 Admin Share Posted May 21, 2008 If its the front ones they will need replacing, only the rear one will tighten with the hub nut

Guest sjc
i tried it once....after 3 hours I stuck a load of grease in and gave up.....didnt even attempt the other one.....had to drill and retap the bolt hole for the disk as the original was rusted in there...a proper pain in the arse. If everythings been off recently and loose and nice and clean then maybe...if its old and rusting and youve not done it before, and are trying to follow haynes then its a shit job imho. still got a pair of front wheel bearings in me ever growing collection of bits that aint going on the car pmsl
Guest steelcabby
its not too bad a job, you just have to be careful not to damage anything when taken the bearing casing out, get the proper tool for it and make it easy for your self, else your be there with pushes and chisles and god know what else getting yourself stressed. i can do it fairly quickly now after doing it a couple of times. but for your first time i would say 2 hours a side, as your need to take your time and look it over before u commit to it.....got a vice? Guest Papa-D
The best bet when you get the hub off the bearings themselves should just slide out no probs unless they are totally f*****d, its the casings that can be a pain to remove and replace. If you look at them first and they aint damaged and look like the new ones, you could just grease up the new bearings and chuck it back on in no time at all. But any scratches, rust, etc on the seats and they will have to come out.
Guest steelcabby
i would change the lot, but you probably already have by now. you can't always tell if the casing is that worn anyway. and if there is play in there then i would say they are shot. just make sure you don't damage by burring up edges etc when you tap them out, or you will have problems in the future
