Hey everyone,

I need a bit more speed and acceleration out my baby and just wondered what was the best way of going around this? I don't really wanna spend a fortune but the car drags so much.

It's an XR3i cab with no engine mods

Thanks

another thing tho, if you dont have alot of knowledge about engines it may be a bad move to put another engine in. Cash and knowledge if it went wrong is needed and plenty is needed indeed.....

Its a 93 but will have to let you know about the engine once i can get outside to find out

Well i love speed but don't really have the cash to do a major conversion, wasn't looking at spending too much. i read in a previous post about adding more speed for a couple hundred pound????

I might leave the engine until i have about a grand or more to spend on it, was looking at doing an engine swap for an RS2000

For your Mk5 I would say a 1.8 ZETEC, if its already got this engine get a MONDEO 2.0 ZETEC, its a good budget upgrade, not too many mods needed, your local mechanic should be able to do it but I think the loom needs to be swapped, if your getting a Mk6 dash installed even better, just get a Mk6 loom and you don't need to chop at the connectors !!! :banana_dance:

Other than that, save up for your RS2000 block !!!

i wouldn't bother with the zetec convertion unless you are turboing it, but i would bother with a rs2000 convertion. very good strong engines, but if you put the 2000 in, make sure you chip it, as it is a bit flat without. still got 151bhp as standard tho.

as someone thats done a Erst conversion on my mk4 I would say don't do it.......... reason ?

As much as I love what my car goes like now I have a couple of points I hate about it now......

1, Petrol........ cuz i drive my car like a c**t I can get better fuel economy out of a 5.7 ltr cadillac.

2, Parts are a little pricer and I tend to find that parts dont last as long (just replaced front wheel bearings AGAIN after just 1year).

3, With close to 200bhp (169bhp when it was tuned) it's pointless driving with wet roads (Hate to think what 300+ is like)

4, Petrol..... ummmm said that already right ?

If I can think of any more I will add

Conclusion: After spending something in the range of £1300 on the conversion I kinder wish I had spent it on the body work to help the car last another 15-20 years, rather than putting a turbo in it and potentionly shorting the life of my cab.

if you can buy a rs turbo complete for like 500 pounds then go for it i say, i payed 200 pounds for a d-reg one and just transferred the loom and engine. it was the best rs engine i ever had.

never had problems with wheel bearings and stuff like that, even when i did my 2.1 convertion. i was running well over 200bhp and the car was sound. as long as you keep it maintained you won't have a problem. would agree with the wet driving part tho. but with the 2.1 zvh it was ten times worse. it didn't matter if it was wet or dry.

i would say it cost abou 700 pounds to do a rs turbo convertion. do it yourself or pay somone in kindness to do it for you, its easy peasey, while your at it. chip it and raise the boost to about 15psi. put a nice uprated intercooler and that will keep you happy for awhile, oh and maybe a mongoose exhaust.

well said dan as a everyday driver you right

lol at wet driving ... try 3l v6 with no sliper with gas then you know what its like driving wet roads

i only wheelspin when i driving like a twat ..... all other times its ok ..... the car and engine will only drive as bad or as hard as the driver

Zetec turbos are a becoming more popular. In my opinion I agree with Graeme because I know he's had an RS and i've got an RS and those engines are really good! The RS2000 i'm on about here and as he said a chip + a few more bits sorted! Also if you have the 130 spec XR3i then u already have an MTX75 box so all you need is engine subframe and off you go! oh and ecu.
