Guest sjc
thanks eric..... some sense tony lol...they will be dual voice coil, are the coils 4ohms each...whcih if wired in parrallel will give a 2ohm load to the amp. if they are 2 ohms each and i wire them in parrallel they will give a 1ohm load, and big tho it is I dont think this amp has enough current for a 1 ohm load. Guest sjc
got a speaker at long last (santa brought it....dont you just luv him) the amp is 15 long.....so ended up with a 15" kicker L5 solobaric as I like a bit of symmetry, got a 05 model with the silver cone. 4ohm dvc which I will run at 2ohms. problem is 15" doesnt stand up in a mk4 boot, and I didnt want it horizontal...but still need to maintain a minimum sealed enclosure size in a small boot... so I am having to use the bit of space at the back....hence the funny shape, plus the angle will mean it looks at you when you are standing behind it. you will see in later piccies that the 9"x4" box section at the back is reduced to 8"x4" after a trial fitting (am I glad I tried it b4 glueing or wot lol) added some hifi quality binding posts and soldered speaker cable to the back started bracing and sealing all joints stuffed holofil into the back cavity lid on and sealed screws as well obviously dunno how the cavity will affect the sound, but I have tried this rather than take every bit of the boot floor up, plus this speaker box is removable. I prefer odd shaped boxes over cubes anyway as they dont reflect internal soundwaves in an orderly fashion, hopefully the hollow fibre filling will lessen its impact. FOr those interested the base peice of mdf is 2 foot square, the front is 9" high, centre 12" high (and 18" back from front) and 8" high at the back. Speaker mounting plate is 24" x 18.3 (ish cut to size) this leaves 14" at the side for the amp (15"x12.5" it will be a squeeze), gonna start on that box next. Cant wait to hear it now meself

Guest sjc
thanks mark, took me about 20 hours so far, never imagined it would take so long, its used nearly all of two 6x2 foot sheets of mdf. tony, i know mate you get caught up in it all, i have built the box somehwre between extended bass and sq dimensions...dont know exactly as i was bracing all over the place and could not be bothered to measure and deduct them all lol charlzy how many farads is it, Im not convinced over these things (too old fashioned i suppose) i would like to give one a go if me lights started dimming with bass notes, but the electrical engineer in me would rather increase alternator output and renew 20 year old alt-batt batt-chassis and engine-chassis cables first.....but that may just be old git talk as things certainly change. anyone have comments on power caps, i see a few in the gallery but am not sure if they were installed for a reason or bought cos they look a bit cool ( and dont get me wrong, if I see one that i think looks good, i may be tempted anyway lmao how much for yours charlzy?) Escort Cabriolet Club
Sorry mate, its 'ALL MINE' lol !!! I just thought it looked good against yours, its 5.0 Farads mate, strong enough for the biggest bass heads, the Power Cab stores a surge of Power to keep your system booming ant not draining the cars electrical system, thats why your headlights flash, for your amp mate I recomend a nice safe 2.0 Farad Power Cap !!! Thanks Charlzy, the theory behind these things I find a bit confusing, so I dont wnat to spend money on something Im not to sure I beleive in at the mo. Is the book specifically for car hi-fi, or is it electrical theory, if its just about car amps/speakers I am interested in reading it, as I cannot find a good guide. If its theory, Ive already got that mate thanks. WHOOOOSH STRAIGHT OVER MY HEAD ALL THAT FARAD THINGY BOBBY BUT LOOKS A GOOD JOB M8 WILL U BUILD ME ON E ONE DAY? cheers enzo...I would wait to see the finished product if I were you...it may all collapse in a heap under strain yet. lol

Escort Cabriolet Club
I got a hand written guide of my mate years ago but I treated myself to a HAYNES ICE MANUAL !!! Its spot on, it explains all the techno-babble and I found it very helpful !!! The Ratio is to use 100,000 Micro-Farads per 100 Watts of Power, so if you use a 1000 Watt amp you should get a 1.0 Farad Power Cap, 1.2 will be better, I have 3200 Watts of PURE MUSIC POWER, so I just went for 5.0 Farads !!! I scanned a couple of pages for you Mick, if you lived a bit closer I would lend it to you lol !!! :happy001:
