i plan to upgrade my sound system, but i ned a bit of advice as i know little about stereos etc.

i have a after market cd player in my mk4 cab at the minute, and i have upgraded the front speakers. the rears are standard.

i plan to cut the panel where the roof fold into and stick some 6x9 sony explode speakers in there.

what i would like to know is... can i just run them as plain spaekers? would i need an amp?

also, i also have some 4 inch speakers n the garage, and i thought i could put these in also next to the 6x9s.

is it realy worth it though do you think?

if i do put the 4 inch speakers in with the 6x9s, how do i wire them in? do i just split the wires off? do i need an amp then?

any advice greatly taken.

Reckon youre going to have to run an amp if you want to run the 4" as well as the 6x9's. In my opinion you should never split the wires between 4 speakers as the ohmage and wattage is effected. You can run the 6x9@s directly from the headunit as well as your front speakers if its a 4 channel stereo. And it should be okay. Amps will improve the quality of the sound at high volume, but it really depends if you want it loud

How many phono outputs have you got on the head unit mate?

If you have only 1 then do like Taz says, run the front and back from the head unit and the 6x9's from a single channel amp.

think i'm gettin a bit closer now to be clued up...

if i did what paul and taz say, i would plug the amp into the back of the head unit, and then plug the 6x9 wires into the amp?

one other thing though... asuming i have the setup above, would the volume control on the head unit then control all 6 speakers?

as i have never had an amp before, anything to be wary of?

Yes mate, you would set the amp up and then when you increase the volume on your head unit it would increase the output to your sub.

You sometimes have a option on the head for sub on/off and level to sub. Ideal if you just want to turn the amp off.

some one has also mentioned a distribution box too. apparently these safely split the wire into two so i can run 4 speakers in the back, instead of 2.

if i did this without an amp, what would happen?

My friend cut into the metal shelf to fit speakers in and tbh, he found it very hard to sell his cabriolet on afterwards there may be strenghtening issues too. Tbh the set up above will not really benefit your system at all with the issue of the hood covering the speakers. The vast majority of the good weather (if we ever get any?) would be presumably spent with the roof off and the speakers muffled. Having witnessed first hand the awfull sound of the speakers muffled against the hood i would strongly advise that the you just upgrade the speakers in the pods or have a custom build fitted with the speakers on show.

As my mate said when he spent a fortune on the install he was well and truelly "pissing in the wind" cutting holes in the metal shelf, and also knocking money off the value of the cab....

Just a lil bit of advise mate....

im afraid thats part and parcel of having a cabriolet.... the only other less drastic option which i have see and does work is this: get a spare rear seat back and then fit a Sub woofer that is mounted centrally on the metal rear seat back and re-upholster the seat. That way if u ever sell you can change the rear seat. I saw this at ford fair a few years ago with a pink mk5....

headphones ? lol

its not only the boot, the rear speaker are in free air, the best sound comes from the footwells, but you cant hear that lol.

I have just bought some rear pods, when I get round to it I am going to hunt down some good but shallow speakers, fit them in the pods and try to close the rear of them off from atmosphere, hoping that i can still get the roof to go down. Imho the rear pods are what let the cabby sound down the most, I can even live with the bass in the tin sound of the boot, but have do do something about the rears.

have you finished yours lurch, what did you decide on in the end???
