Guest fordescort1
Hi all, getting my 1990 xr3i ready for mot at the moment. A couple of small problems, can anyone help. The rev counter isn't reading property, its far too low. I have swapped it with a known good instrument cluster but still the same. Any ideas??? Its an efi model and idle is a little lumpy, drives OK in fact goes really well, any pointers at what to look at first.
Guest fordescort1
Just to clarify the rev counter fault isn't an idle speed fault, its revving fine but the reading is about half what it should be
RScab
Try cleaning the Idle speed control valve & check for any air leak see if that shorts the lumpy tick over
Guest fordescort1
Is the idle control valve the metal unit between the fuse box and air filter on the o/s strut top. Could this make it run worse??? Would rather leave it alone if its going to cause problems.

allblue
Double check you have the correct EFI specific rev counter. Using an MFi counter will cause the RPM to under read, I know this because I have fitted an MFI rev counter in mine, as it was in better condition (white markings had flaked off). It under reads, but i've gotten used to it now. Got a brand new efi rev counter to fit in it's place thou.
