Guest DJH1989
Hi all I'm new to this site & I have recently bought a mk4 escort cabriolet (love these cars!) My problem with it is it turns over quite slowly & is worse when it's warm. I had the battery & alternator tested & was told they are perfect. I had to give the starter motor a tap the other day because it failed on me so could that be the problem causing the slow crank issue? Thanks in advance

Guest DJH1989
Hi thanks for the reply. I'm going to replace the starter motor anyway but just been told another fix might work by cleaning the bullet type connector from the red cable from the starter motor. Anyone else heard of this? This is the 1st cabby I've owned so not sure about the common faults it has. Thanks again in advance.

welshlad
Im having a similar prob with a new starter and battery and the bullet cable is the trigger wire from the ignition, thats what i think my problem could be and yeh id try and clean the terminal/bolt that it goes too and look inside the end witha torch to see if its corroded etc
Guest DJH1989
Thanks for all your help everyone. I'll take a look at the terminal when I next get time in the daylight. Either way I definitely have to fit a new starter motor because it's already failed on me & don't fancy it failing again when I fill up with petrol haha. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks again
welshlad
mine used to regulary stop working at the petrol station and no were else! so i used a diff petrol station with a little bit a decline off the forcourt to bump it
Guest DJH1989
Hi all. I have replaced the starter motor & cleaned up the terminal on the red wire I said about in my 1st post & now it cranks over absolutely perfect but now have found out that trying to start it before the work has killed the battery. I'm just going to replace that because the other one I was told was knackered anyway haha but thanks for the help guys it's much appreciated! Guest 2steppa
I've got the same issue - I have to be careful where I stop when the engine's hot or it won't crank - sounds like the battery is flat but it isn't. Give it 15 minutes and it will go. I guess a new starter is on the cards.

welshlad
mine has started doing it again! but the strange thing is, is that if i press the clutch in and put it in 1st/2nd/3rd gear and try and start it, then its starts fine. WTF??? its a strange one but im not bothered as long as it starts lol
