Guest Mark Freshrides George
Hey guys. Got a problem that's probably rediculously easy to fix but REALLY don't want to spend loads of money just before X-Mas Everything has been fine right up until today when I tried to start the car. It turns over really slowly and just drains all the power from the battery. Normally it will turn over a couple of times slowly then speed up and start the car fine. But it just won't do it today. Got the battery on a trickle charge at the moment and someone coming with some jumper cables in a bit to try and get some power going and make sure it isn't the battery. But I'm convinced it's going to be the starter. anyone know of somewhere I can get one cheap that will work like ASAP. preferably get it fixed before I have to go to work tomorrow. Can't really afford the time off. Many thanks in advance!
Guest kenny stag
Sounds like a lazy starter,or could be a bad earth, or battery problem, just work thru all the possibilities.

stevescab
if it starts off a jump then its your battery as winters here !!
Guest Mark Freshrides George
Cheers guys. let it trickle charge for a few hours. NothingSister came round with the jump leads. Still just as slow. Rocked back and forward. Still nothing. Cleaned all the earths. Still nothing. All the electrics work. Radio, Lights, Windows, Oil pressure light goes out on cranking. but still nothing. Found a company quite local that re-conditions starter motors for about £40 as Eurocarparts didn't have any in stock. Carparts4less can't deliver 'till Wednesday. And the Ford Stealership wanted £128 plus VAT for a new unit. and then they didn't have any stock. Last resort is to get it re-conditioned tomorrow as apprently if they can't do it the same day they will give you an already-done unit. So fingers crossed this sorts it! Guest Mark Freshrides George
Right. So I've bought a new starter motor. £61 as I couldn't get the other one refurbished for a decent price. Might have to find the bits and do it myself. Nerver mind. Anyone know where I can get a heat sheild to try and prevent it happening again? Been trawling through ebay but can't seem to get anything close. Or is an exhaust wrap going to be a better bet? It's got the original mani, but then goes into a stainless 2-1 down pipe then stainless through to the back. so the downpipe sits right next to the starter. gingergman
asuming its a mk3/4, you will struggle to get a standard heat shield for it, rare! wrappng the exhaust will help, thats what ive done. the starters always get hot on these, but a new one should last years! Guest Mark Freshrides George
Yeah Ford don't make them any more either. Yeah it's an '89 MK4. Got the new starter on. now the battery is dead. Freaking NIGHTMARE!!! so once it's all sorted I will be wrapping the exhaust.
