Guest Milkey
Hi All, Just recently my Cabrio's developed a bit of an intermittent starting problem. Sometimes it starts straight away - Others it just turns over but wont fire up. The fuel pump was whining so I replaced that and the whining has stopped but the starting prob hasn't. I realise there could be a number of causes for this problem but if anyone has had a similar problem or has any suggestions that may save me from shelling out on parts I don't need I'd appreciate it! Thanks, Dan.
Vincygav
Does the problem when it doesnt start occur when the engine is hot or cold. When was the last time you changed your spark plugs?
Guest Milkey
It happens when it's hot or cold unfortunately - It likes to do it when people are watching mostly lol. I've got a new set of plugs and leads on the way as although I've only had it a couple of months they look as though they haven't been changed in a while... Guest Lee81
If your cars MFI system i'd put good money on the fuel pump relay being the cause
Guest Mk4 Kenilworth
This could aso be a battery on the way out. Does it struggle more in cold weather? Next time it doesnt start, try jump starting it via another battery. If it fires up, probem solved.
Guest Milkey
@Lee81 - It is an MFI, And I bet you're right - I'll get hold of a new one and fit it shortly. Thanks @MK4 Kenilworth - It has had a recent battery so I don't think that's the problem but thanks for the suggestion!

Guest janpeter
You should hear the fuel pump prime? If not suspect fuel pump, fuel pump relay, crankshaft sensor or power supply to both. Have you had the car plugged in to diagnostic to check it? We have had problems with wiring plug on pump its self but this requires the tank to be lowered...
