Guest famasfilms
Hey, I have a G reg MkIV escort. I have had it for about a month and after 2 weeks it developed a noise from the clutch when pulling away in first gear. The garage said it would need a new clutch but not straight away. Last few days there seems to be some acceleration issues. Driving into 1st then 2nd gear does not seem to build up much speed, in fact the speed dial barely moves past ten despite the engine revving up to around 2000 revs, I then shift up to 3rd and this will get me up to 25-28mph with the rev counter past 2000. At this point I usually shift into 4th and get up to 40mph before going into 5th Is this normal? I'm not sure if I'm just being overly paranoid because it is a 23 yr old car but I certainly don't remember this issue when I first got the car

gingergman
Sounds like the clutch may be slipping, if you put your foot down when your driving along does it rev up but you get nowhere?
Guest famasfilms
hi guys, thanks for the help. When I drive away from zero in 1st gear the car accelerates and moves forward but the speedometer does not increase, when the rev-meter reaches 2000-2200 I shift into second and the speedometer will stay still. Again I shift up at 2000-2200 and going by the speedometer 3rd gear will only get me to 20mph before the revmeter reaches 2000-2500 and I have to shift into 4th. From 4th I can get to 30-35 and then 5th cruising at 40mph seems to be relatively normal. Also...when I come to a stop at traffic lights the speedometer will not decrease to zero, it will stick at 10mph. I am going to ring the garage now, I'm not sure why they said there was no need to replace the clutch a few weeks ago when it was just making a funny noise as it's obviously got worse. gingergman
You tried driving it faster, take it to like 4 or 5 k and see what it's like
Guest famasfilms
You tried driving it faster, take it to like 4 or 5 k and see what it's like I haven't Forgive my ignorance/inexperience but I only passed my test last year, I've not driven any of the cars I've owned "hard". I always thought that shifting at 2500 revs was optimal in terms of fuel efficiency. What is best?
gingergman
Yeah changing at about 3000 is good for fuel efficiency, changing at like 2000 will take awhile to build up speed. The Speedo won't move till you reach about 10mph
Guest famasfilms
I've just driven it home from work and everything seemed to be running smoothly - acceleration was fine and the speedo was working fine. Completely different to how it was driving earlier today and yesterday. Strange. Edited May 9, 2013 by famasfilms
Guest famasfilms
This morning I was due to take it into the same garage that a few weeks ago said it would need a few clutch in the future. As it was running ok on the drive home I cancelled that appointment. This morning the speedo was playing up again, the most notable example was when I arrived at work, there are a number of speed bumps on the way to the office, even when I slowed down significantly to go over these the speed dial stayed static...eg I entered the office park, approached the bumps at 25-30, slowed right down, dropped into 2nd gear to go over them yet the dial did not flinch. Any ideas? is it clutch related? Halfords Autocentre do a free clutch check so it's booked in there for 830am tomorrow
gingergman
doesn't sound like it to me.
