hey all

as previous posts state, my fuel gauge dont work and i assumed it was the sender.

today i was proved wrong.

i checked the wiring under the rear seat, found the connector (1 brown and one red wire) and did checked for voltage to the sender and there is nothing going to it.......

my question is where do i start looking to find the fault in the power supply? does the fuel circuit have any fuses or common wire breakage points that i could check first? if not i guess i will have to chase the whole wiring back yea?

thanks

ok so today i decided to start checking my wuel sender wiring.

i started by disconnecting the plug under the rear seat.

then i traced wiring bak to the fuel computer and clocks. all wiring looks fine with no breaks. but stil no power at connecter.

i then (with connector still unplugged) ran a live and earth from the fuel gauge directly to the sender unit plug( the one under rear seat) when connected one way, nothing, but when connected the other way the fuel gauge goes up and reads full., the fuell computer runs through the sender aswell.

i think this means my fuel sender has deffo gone and i need a nnew one.

can anyone else help please????

thanks

dan.

Hi m8

not sure what model car you hav EFi MFi etc

But Fuel gauges normally work off a negative supply

the live to the fuel gauge is supplied from the ignition

connect the cable from the earth side of the gauge directly to earth - gauge should read full

if it does,

do the same @ the tank sender end if it again reads full - its the sender

make sure you put the correct cable to earth if you have an EFi it will have a live supply for the intank fuel pump

hey mat6e, its the mk4 xr3i, 1.6, MFI,

its weird because when i disconnect plug for sender under rear seat i can connect both terminas that lead to the clocks together and nothing happens.

but if i run seperate wires from the back of the clocks to the sender side of the plug it does nothing with the wires one way round, and the other way round fuel gauge reads full.

i lose my fuel computer as well when sender plug is disconnected.

ford say a sender is £65 plus vat, which i dont mind paying if the fuel sender is the cause of the fault, im not so happy however about them saying i also need a modified piece of wire that they want to charge me £25 plus vat for.

cheers

dan.
