Guest theyorkshireterrier
Hi all, Complete nOOb question. Got myself an 89 XR3i Cab mk4 and didnt quite make it home! :@ Fuel pump problems, Started whining really loud and now it wont start. £220 to the AA later I got the car home. So i went and got a no tax no test 91 XR3i mk5. From what i can gather the fuel pump diameter is the same but the pipes aren't and neither is the connectors. so to all those in the know, can i just take the whole tank from the donor, pump n all, and just modify the wiring? The mk5 runs well but I want to keep the mk4 on the road as the mk5 needs a lot more work. What other parts can i use without too much hassle? I want the black roof from the 5 on the 4. Guest theyorkshireterrier
It is def fuel related, When sprayin carb cleaner in the air intake the car ran great, stop spraying, engine died Idling at 500rpm, Rev - Coughs, Splutters and dies. Fuel gauge don't work but it only took £3.29 at the petty station before it clicked off (and sprayed me with petrol)
Guest Lee81
Theres nout thats realy interchangable. Screws possible engine parts if the mk5 has a CVH. Everything else is different. If your sure its the pump you can buy new ones for not alot of money of ebay. Only problem you have is the tank being full of fuel. You can clamp the main pipe but as there old it may split. I'd syphone as much of the fuel out as possible first. Then make sure the wiring at the battery is disconnected before removing it.
gingergman
you can get a new pump for 40 quid, is it mfi or efi? like lee says it depends if its got a cvh engine. roof etc wont fit
Guest theyorkshireterrier
Both are 1.6 efi not sure about cvh it's coming in about an hour Ill take a look. Are the differences subtle as they look very similar. As the j is early mk5 era any chance it was a late registered mk4?
Guest theyorkshireterrier
The fuel doctor is coming today to completely drain the tank aswell. Not sure how long it's been stood so best to get new anyway
Guest Lee81
Mk4 and mk5 look completely different so theres no subtle diffrences. On a 89 plate your mk4 will most likly be MFI injection. The mk5 on a J plate will probably be a 1.6 CVH running EFI hence none of the anciallrys will be of use
Guest theyorkshireterrier
Update: the new one is a mk5! Starting to notice a lot of subtle differences. It also runs well might just test and tax this one. Anyone near Yorkshire want a mk4 project? Fuel pump wheel bearings and a few electrical faults. Shocks need doing but new ones supplied
Guest theyorkshireterrier
The 89 is efi mate. Will take pics later today. However layout is quite different. Air filter on other side etc etc
Guest theyorkshireterrier
Another update. Turns out I'm a c*ck. Tank is empty!!! Now to work out why it won't accept fuel I guess
Guest theyorkshireterrier
Smiles all round! Filled the tank and guess what? She started! Wheel bearings tomorrow and shell run sweet Will also service the other and get it tested. If alll goes well I have 2 great runners for under 1700 total cost
