Guest tony.rose
Sounds like a wiring problem, could have a damaged wire some where, you will need a meter to check for power loss and trace back from there.
Guest tonkerboy23
Check the 2 small relays for the lights in the underbonnet fuse box as from my experience seems to be a common problem and had this on a few mk4's i have owned
iansoutham
I'd change the light stalk if it were me. The internal connections are shorting out. Remove the steering cowling, turn the headlamps on and wait 5 minutes, then feel the side of the light stalk. It will almost certainly be overly warm. Guest shaun
If the wires have been cut under the fuse box there has to be other relay's for them... as other have said the seem to common problem but check the switch aswell .... Had simlar problem on my mk4 the switch and the 2 white relay's in the fuse box(wires melted underneath)
